Farewell to the World Concert.

Had been a rather warm day, but extremely long for those who were in the front few rows. Paul was having a drink and the first few rows of ppl started chanting "water" he was rather nice and asked if they wanted a drink and there was a loud "Yes" back from the crowd. Paul came out from behind his drums, stood right in front of them all and struck a pose and finished off his bottle of water then threw the empty bottle into the crowd.... It cracks me up evertime I see it on the video....

It was the silly little things like that that make him such a memorable character.

My personal fave Hester moment...November 93, Crowded House gig at Forum in London.

Paul ranting about the support band Frente and the fact that their dressing room was above the Crowdies. Or should I say toilet facilities and Paul's worry about the hygiene factors involved. Translate this to Paul's words and you get the idea!

Loads of Hester moments. Great thread idea.

Take care all.

I also remember always getting a kick out of seeing him on that Wiggles show, all dressed up like a chef and everything. Never failed to make me laugh.
Oh man, how could I forget? I'm also a relatively new fan, never had the opportunity to see CH live, but I will never forget sitting with my 3-year-old nephew, watching the Wiggles, and having them introduce "Chef Paul." I almost died. At first, all I could think was, "Yeah, it looks like him, and his name is Paul, but c'mon..." Then I looked it up, and sure enough Big Grin

That will always make me smile. Sadly I have no more personal memories than that one, but I've really enjoyed reading everyone else's Smiler Very pleasant in what's been a trying time.

I'm unfortunately too young to have ever seen Crowded House perform (they broke up literally right after I started to listen to their music thanks to Recurring Dream) but I always crack up whenever I hear 'Sister Madly' on the bonus live CD when midway through song Paul had some kind of mental lapse and completely messes up his drum beat.

"In five minutes time I won't even remember that; I don't even remember what we were doing before this. It all sounds good out the back there... what are we doing now?"

I'm not familiar with the song, but even the idea of it cracks me up!

If anyone has the lyrics or knows where I could find a recording of the song, I would be very grateful!

(I posted this in the RIP thread and I'm happy to share it here Smiler )

February 1994, during the 'Together Alone' Tour. Crowded House were playing at Raiders Niteclub 20 mins from where I lived. When Paul came out from his drumkit for 'Sister Madly', he headbutted the microphone and I though it would land on some punters heads!

Thanks to a heads up from Peter, a group of us managed to wait outside the back of the venue and after singing 'Better Be Home Soon', we got to meet the band and me being very impulsive, kissed Paul on the cheek. He blushed and said 'Thanks'

I dug out my photo album of CH memoribilia and found my concert ticket which the guys signed and in black ink was 'Paulo' Smiler I'm so glad to have that momento of Paul

The word 'wuckers' always makes me think of Paul when I hear it.

At the start of the 'mean to me' video Paul is on the phone talking and he says 'no wuckers'.

Short for 'no wucking furries' (a mix of the letters in 'no ****ing worries')

That would've been cool, but that memory alone is still awesome regardless-definitely worth treasuring. You're welcome Smiler .

i was an impressionable teen when i first discovered CH. It was the mid to late eighties. i was FANatically enough to be able to see them dozens of times - lucky enough to be in the front row for most, and truly blessed to be able met them all (including Tim) my speach, dress, attitude was all influenced by the lyrics and press releases of the band. I tell people that Neil taught me to play the guitar and sing, which he did, kinda, with singalongs and tab books. paul once explain to me the true meaning of Temple of Low Men's name on the night of the LLT debut release. i have been changed for the better by this band, a band i love dearly. my favorite memory is actually a line from a song.."colouring in the sky and painting ladders to heaven." it paints the mental picture that warms me, he writes in pastels. its sad that paul died but absolutely fantastic that he was here!!!!

The last time I saw Paul was 1992.My band opened for Crowded house in Edinburgh,Scotland. The gig was for Aids awareness.Paul was standing at the front of the stage with a bucket full of condoms. He started throwing condoms at the crowd shouting "Here you go,use them well".
He then sang a song from the front of the stage(can't remember which one,it's been a while)with his pants down, bare butt facing the crowd for the entire song(great sense of humour). He smiled all night long on stage and in the dressing rooms.Oddly enough,as fate would have it,our drummer was a huge fan of Pauls and had actually bought tickets for the show before learning that we were on the bill that night.I had a great time myself that night and since that night, Paul has always come to mind whenever I recalled it.He was after all the main man that night.
God bless him.

*Bump*

What a great thread! Big Grin

My funniest memories of Paul were on MTV Australia with Richard Wilkins back in the late 1990's. I will never forget the night of mayhem that followed. I guess you had to see it to believe it and there's just no way I can accurately describe everything that happened. The night ended with Paul tying up the TV host and pretending to blow the set up. It was hysterical and absolutely rivetting. How I wish I could see that footage again....

Does anyone else have something new to add?

Reading the title of the thread - "warm" is exactly the word I'd use when remembering meeting Paul after one of the WOMAD shows in 1993. Onstage he was typical high-energy, laughter-inducing Paul. When I spoke to him afterwards he had such an intense yet gentle energy to him (that sounds very new-agey, but I don't know how else to describe it!); he was all smiles and seemed genuinely interested in talking to the fans. As we were leaving he reached over and gave my shoulder a little squeeze...one of my favorite CH memories. Smiler
