ALT. I think there are strongly divided opinions on this but I absolutely love every second of the album. It sounds very unfinished and raw...there's counting in and some random studio sounds, plus forgetting of words in backing vocals from time to time and even what sounds like some improvisation.

Tim doesn't do much singing - his voice wasn't in great shape around the time of ALT, but he does sing the whole of What You've Done (which I prefer to the Feeding The Gods version), and you can hear him recognisably on almost all the tracks. Andy and Liam seem to carry more of the vocal duties, which isn't that much of a problem because Liam has a brilliant voice (Halfway Round The World and The Day You Were Born are great examples).

The ALT album is what got me into Andy White's stuff too. I bought Altitude not knowing what to expect but needing it to complete my Finn album collection...and was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't what I was expecting.

If the price is reasonable on the copies you see, I'd say its worth giving a go.

Yep, I agree with deadstar. Quirky album, really quite loose and fun. Some songs still irritate me a bit (Girlfriend Guru gets my finger on the skip button pretty quickly) but better to have a strong reaction than no reaction Smiler

Girlfriend Guru is one of my favourite tracks from this album! Tim's vocal makes it..."my girlfriend is a guru, she knows just what to do"...

Aha! Therein lies its genius.

I'm listening to Andy White's "Teenage" album from 1996ish. This album was directly after ALT and it is one of my all-time favourite albums. You can make some very direct links with ALT and its sound, Tim and Liam both appear at times on the album and co-wrote some tracks with Andy, and there's even the line "We took a big fat plane/halfway 'round the world/I felt the power of the violent hour with my favourite girl" in the song "Its Gonna Be Like This All The Time".

So if you like ALT, I think that this album is a worthy piece of further listening.

Just thought I'd bring that up.

I got the ALT album when it came out, but I haven't really heard much of Andy White's material, may have to check it out I think.

@six: Did you find a copy in the meantime? I did, and I love it to death. Tim's voice at that stage really suits the songs. Must get me a copy of "Teenage" as well, I think.
Interestingly, "Altitude" is one of those albums, which can be found (used) more easily in Germany than elsewhere.

I enjoy this album, and it wasn't too hard for me to get. I forget how I gotit, though. It was last year and it came either by Amazon, JB Hi-Fi, or a wander through the 2nd hand shops in Melbourne.

For the quality of the songs, it's just a fun album. When I listen, I hear 3 people who are really enjoying making music with each other, and that joy is contagious.

I would say "Girlfriend Guru" is my favorite song. For me, it's got the sexy groove down pat, and Tim's voice floats on top of it like rich cream.

I knew I'd find an ALT thread here somewhere! I hadn't listened to this CD in a while, so I got it out to play on my drive to/from work. First of all, I'd forgotten how funny the liner notes are! Smiler

I love the spontaneous, informal feel of this album. Favorites are "The Refuge Tree" and "Girlfriend Guru"...the latter is so trippy, tribal, and sexy... *fans self*

Rediscovering music is fun!

I got my copy directly from Andy White Mr Sadly.

I sent an initial enquiry to:

info@andywhite.com

I then received this message:

quote:
just send a cheque or postal order for $35 payable to A White to us at

ALT Recordings
PO Box 7144
Upper Ferntree Gully
VIC 3156

and write your name and address on the back of the envelope

You'd probably need to make sure they have stock available. And you could probably get it cheaper than this elsewhere, but I wanted the copy which had the extra or alternative song.

Good luck. Smiler

Well, technically it was her copy, and she wandered off...
