That's What I Call Love![]() |
I knew about it for a while, but finally caved and ordered it yesterday. We'll see how fast it takes to get to me.
I'd bought one of the other knock offs in February through Amazon, and because of that I was hemming and hawing about getting this new version or not. There also happened to be a discrepancy between the Amazon listing of the new CD and the one on the Cherry Red website. To clarify things, I'd written to Paul Griggs and asked him a few questions about it. This one is the first time the band has had any involvement in it, including providing some of the photographs and such, most likely from Paul's site. Paul does poke around here and has posted a time or two. He's a nice guy who's always been willing to answer my questions (and it's his birthday tomorrow. Have a good one, Paul!). You could probably find out more at his website: PaulGriggs.com ~*~ Lu Yan: He who speaks, does not Know; He who Knows, does not speak. Surely you're masterful. |

Thought I'd post an update on this one.
I'd bought one of the other versions of the album last February just so I could hear Nigel's other work, particularly his songwriting as he was the main songwriter of the group. It wasn't a bad CD. I listened, thought "Okay, whatever. Curiousity satisfied," and then enjoyed his solo album Sleeper more. Anyhow, as I wrote on this thread in November, I ordered the CD directly from Rev-Ola. Though an English company, they did have "Rest of World" prices for sending, and I live... in the rest of the world. I had problems with them. I got my confirmation receipt, but after 2 weeks of nothing (no charge posted to my credit card, no CD in the mail), I wrote to them to ask what was happening with my order. I got no attention whatsoever. So... I ended up ordering the CD from Amazon.com on Christmas Day, and it just arrived today. I have had good sales history with Amazon, but I didn't go through them immediately because the track listing on the Rev-Ola site and on the product description at Amazon are conflicting. I wrote to Paul Griggs about that because I wanted to be sure I was getting the right thing, after all. So here's the deal: Yes, Amazon has the *right* product. Despite the discrepancy in the product information, it really is the right CD if it does list Rev-Ola as the record company. [Octopus at Amazon ] Sound-wise, it is much better than the version I'd gotten last February. This does a good job to show what remastering can do. It does much better justice to the songs themselves and the performances. I would say there is good sonic clarity. I enjoyed the songs better on first listen when I wasn't so very taken with them on the other CD. It is also an official release thanks to the cooperation of the Griggs brothers. I didn't want to buy it if there'd be a "version of the month" since there are so many old knock-offs from various companies with no real connection to the band members So no matter how you actually get it (Amazon or other online vendor) this is the one to buy if you're going to get it. Inside is a nicely done booklet with a band history and photos. I haven't read the history yet, but Paul already has thorough information his website. It's like his site in a spiffy package with a few pictures that I haven't seen put online yet. Paul does most of the singing in the band, and at certain times he sounds freakishly like John Lennon. It's quite eerie, especially when covering Beatles tunes. If you want opinions of the songs themselves, I can do that, but in a different post at a different time. ~*~ Lu Yan: He who speaks, does not Know; He who Knows, does not speak. I bought the album about 15 years ago and I still play it a lot. They are great little pop songs - levelling somewhere between early pink floyd and the kinks. In fact reminds me of Queen I and Queen II albums
Good caranby sounds i reckon - very differnt to enz and related and they should have featured on the Split Enz and beyond cd in my opinion. Top Album - get it! I think my version is called "Restless Night: PLUS" not sure what the plus is for but it has a 10 page liner notes. Enjoy! |
