Nick Seymour always seemed like the 'unappreciated' one of Crowded House so i decidedto start my own forum on him. He is such an cool and interesting guy - plays a great bass, does really cool artwork, really into music.
We hear about Neil, but I wonder how Nick is coping at this time. I hope he's OK. I really feel for them all. Anyone want to say anything, go right ahead. |

Good idea! But I don't think he is that underestimated, he is responsible for the very unique 'visual' Crowded House and for playing my favourite instrument (together with drums!).But it is true most people worry about Neil's suffering and Nick has not been mentioned that much.
I don't know what's with bass, but I love its sound and the way players move when playing. Nick sounds and looks so good in the Farewell concert... Both bass and drums are like defenders in soccer, they do an essential job, but often are overshadowed by the 'stars' of the song, that is the singing and guitars in music, and forwards in soccer. I got tired of the high notes from guitar solos, they've become annoying. Give me piano, saxo, a different guitar sound or any other instrument solo and I'm happy! |

Anyone know if Nick ever had an art exhibition, or whether he's even continued with his artwork???

Nick is a true artist. He is a painter, a musician, a songwriter, a producer, and who knows what else...
As a Bass player I think he fit perfectly with CROWDED HOUSE and was responsible for some of the most captivating parts on some of the best loved songs. He also became part of TARMAC ADAM (which I really like) with Paul Hester, so I can only imagine how devastated he must of been. I for one still think that the best thing they could all do (Nick, Neil & Tim, Mark Hart) is get into the studio and record a new CROWDED HOUSE CD to honor Paul Hester. With all do respect, maybe Tim could sit on the drums for this one... |

I absolutely agreed that Nick is a true artist in many respects, and he was perfect for Crowded House, just like Hessie was.
It's kinda disappointing that we don't hear about about him. He played the greatest bits in the Crowded House songs on bass. His work with Tarmac Adam continues to show his great talent. He also did a lot of work on his brother, Mark's solo albums (which I have to say are pretty good). His artwork is also really cool - he did all the album covers, clothing designs and stage sets - so talented. I really like him coz his such a cool and talented guy. I really admire that he was able to take his passions of art and music, and made a successful career doing what he loved. It'd be cool if Neil, Nick and Mark recorded some tribute songs for Hessie. Again, I hope Nick's doing OK, taking care of himself, and knowing we are all behind him at this time, as we have and always will. Hopefully, he's spending some time with his loving family and friends for a while, and not so far away in Ireland. |

That bass bit in 'Instinct' after 'where the true present lies are calling down' always makes me feel better.

The little riff he does just coming into the second verse of "Distant Sun" is probably one of my favourite little moments in music, It was one hell of a cool moment seeing him do that in Dublin last year. His Basswork on the live versions of many TOLM songs such as "I Feel Possessed" and "Mansion in The Slums" definitely had an influence on my own bass playing.
The back artwork (The Burning Buildings\Car Crashes) of Temple of Low Men is my favourite part of any album cover by anyone ever (PJ's Mental Notes painting comes in 2nd). And what he added to different songs on "Neither Am I" by Bell X1 from their original demos as Producer is what makes that one of my favourite records. Most specifically just before the vocals come in on "Offshore" where the drums drop out halfway through the bar for a bar and a half. Catches you off guard, and sounds perfect. He took the piss out of me in RR's for 15 minutes about a Rolling Stones bandana I was wearing on the night the Stones played in Dublin back in 2003. And then told me a few stories about Sheryl Crow being able to drink the Crowdies under the table during the US Tour. He claimed it was Mark's fault. He had them all eating porridge instead of drinking. There's lots of Nick stories wandering around the musical communities back in Ireland. Everybody I've ever talked to all seem to have a lot of time for the man. He's also a semi-regular surfer at a beach an hour south of my homeplace back in Ireland. Love his Bass playing, his artwork, and his production style (Basing that on one album). Have a lot of respect for the man. That's pretty much all I have to say about Nick. |

Wonder how much Nick had been in touch with Neil before this April? Last I knew, they weren't in touch as much as Paul was was both of them...
Can anyone shed any light? |

Anyone who's interested...Nick once had his work on show in 1990. He had to design a surfboard, which looks very cool with it's Crowdie/Nick style!

In one of the melbourne papers gig guide last week it said Nick was playing with james Reyne at the Corner Hotel Richmond end of May.
Does this sound right? I know JR has been playing with Mark Seymour and wondered if it was a misprint??? |

AnnieMay,
It sounds like a typo because it is Mark who is touring with James Reyne. However, if you say 'at the end of May' then that would work out because they are playing two gigs at the Corner on the 27th and 28th. (Source: http://www.markseymour.com.au ) Maybe Nick will be playing with Mark, with the shows being in Melbourne. I'm probably gonna go see it anyway. Also, Mark and James Reyne played at the MAX Sessions 'Australian Icons' special earlier, which was dedicated to Hessie but I don't know if it was at the Corner. I think it was at the Arts Centre or something. It wouldn't have surprised me if Nick made a special appearance then. Hope that helps anyway. |

OK yes it was 27th or 28th May so if you have seen that advertised for James and *Mark* then I'm sure that's who it is. I thought maybe those 2 had finished their shows together and because this isnt til the end of May perhaps it *was* Nick. But it doesn't sound like it.
It was just in a listing, you know "James Reyne and Nick Seymour etc etc." No big announcement about Nick or anything. Typo me thinks. |

C'mon...I'm 19 and I absolutely love all those artists...Neil, Nick, Deb Conway, Mark Seymour, Australian Crawl, Hunters and Collectors...their music is timeless and so part our Aussie culture...they all just make me proud to be an Aussie!!
(Even if Neil is a New Zelander but he's lived in Melbourne for a long time so I think of him as an honourary Aussie! |
