this is actually worse than misheard lyrics. i thought the title of 'this' song may be something like: carry, 'carie' on?? guessing and wishing lol, at the title.

'it's from a 1988 kcrw recording of tim and neil.... do you know what song it is?' i asked my nice friend mummakook, providing her w/ my peculiar phonetic maori lyrics.

she somehow managed to help me out: pokarekare ana. lol lol lol! what did i know? i don't speak maori, don't live in nz or oz--i was truly and deliriously innocent!!!

thank you everybody who provided me w/ such lol's at their foibles. hope i’ve done same for you.

will you indulge me, a little story, now? i'm putting this song, that i now know the name of, on a 50th bday commemorative cd (for the ears of 4 people only).

neil, having turned 50 on may 27, will be 'playing' this week, at a celebration for my bff, born june 13, 1958 and me, born june 21, 1958. high tea will be put on by a wonderful english friend, who is a tea fanatic!

but i'm the only finnatic out of the 4! always trying to ‘promote’ neil to disadvantaged friends. ‘and i‘m neil's long lost twin sister…. poor mrs finn had to wait 3 weeks, after neil, before i was born! then, there a terrible mix-up, i somehow ended up in the usa and missed out on the nurturing of the finn family!’ a sad tale, yeah?

I understand and sympathize with this mishearing! Smiler The Maori phrases and New Zealand geography always throw me, from Split Enz (aya-taya-what?) to Crowded House (the sound of Te Awamutu baffled me for years) to Neil Finn solo (the answer is walking the dog in what? Where?).

But my own biggest Finn Brothers mishearing was more prosaic. Before I got ahold of the physical cd of Everyone Is Here, with its lyrics sheet, and while I was just listening to the iTunes download (and not paying any attention to the track listings, apparently), I managed to completely mangle the key title word to one of the album's uptempo songs. I've forgotten now what I thought I heard, but it was poetic, it was fraught with meaning...and it most definitely was not "homesick."

So it appears, there have been a few instances of misheard lyrics from EIH. What's it all about? Sing up clearly, guys! (Kidding!)
My best one involves, "Won't Give In".
I misheard the end of the 2nd verse:

What does it mean when you long for someone
And you call out their name
and you carry it on

Ziggy Freud (and other famous old shrinks of his time) believed that our misinterpretaions relate to our preoccupations. Let's just say that at the time, I was carrying on an affair with a man from Melbourne (an Aussie 80s popstar /actor is all I'm going to say.) So completely startruck was I, I wasted many a moment longing for him -almost forgetting the beautiful partner, who in spite of everything, is still with me! Those were dark times -and yet I will never be able to hear the CH song, "Into Temptation", without fondly remembering ----- ------. Wink

"Pure communication happens when we catch a glimpse of ourselves in someone else and remember that we are all one being." (Tucker Lieberman)

"You reveal me to myself [l]ike the sun reveals the day"(Tim Finn)

Well duh! It ain't rocket science: perhaps next time try not to state the bleeding obvious Smiler Alas the name ain't Ziggy, it's Sigmund - just in case there any young fans here who haven't been taught psychology in high school, or heaven forbid - want or need to know more.

Anyway back on topic! Here is my favourite lyric that is up in contention as to whether it's is right, or wrong - as I believe there are conflicting sources on the Internet to ascertain which are the 'official lyrics'.

this Gentle Hum
coming up from before time
find another meaning inside
this Gentle Hum
giving it back to me
find another meaning inside
