Round Three is a little different because we need to combine all the Enz, CH, and Tim Finn songs into their own single categories. The Neil Finn and Finn Brothers categories were combined in Round Two (because they have a lot fewer songs). So, three Neil Finn songs and three Finn Brothers songs will automatically advance to round four and they are:

Neil Finn:
She Will Have Her Way (Try Whistling This) 29%
Try Whistling This (Try Whistling This) 14%
Sinner (Try Whistling This) 13%

Finn Brothers:
Angels Heap (Finn) 18%
Suffer Never (Finn) 20%
Won't Give In (Everyone Is Here) 14%

Round FOUR will finally combine all the songs no matter who recorded them. For now, three songs from each of the following polls will advance to round four. Please choose the song which you personally feel is the best choice and abstain as needed.

It was a SNAP for me, because I'm super-opinionated and hypercritical of everything!

But seriously, thanks Painaporo for your continued efforts. It's interesting how, looking back to previous polls and lists, the same groups of songs end up leading the pack: perennial fan faves Distant Sun, FAYF, DDIO, Into Temptation from Crowded House, MTMG from Split Enz, Persuasion from Tim, SWHHW from Neil. The only heavyweight conspicuous by it's absence here is Nails In My Feet.

So that means...your criticisms are bigger but mine are faster? Big Grin

I echo and redouble Ross's thanks, Painaporo. It's an interesting project and, the way you've structured it thus far it's yielding some interesting results.

Well, I'm happy "Bold As Brass" made it this far at least!

Man, how irritating is it to be a die hard Enz fan only to see "Message to My Girl" overwhelmingly chosen as the the best Enz song and then "I Got You" as a distant second?

I'm talking to those of you who think the Enz was the best work either Neil or Tim has ever done. Those of you who think it was all downhill after True Colours (or maybe even Frenzy). I know you're out there! Personally, I've always thought "Message" was a good song but I'm not so sure that it would even make it into my top ten favorite Enz songs. In a way, it manages to be the exact sort of song that the Enz set out *not* to make in the 70's. It's a sappy, overproduced, short little radio pop song. It clearly doesn't represent the real talents of the Enz as a band. It just features the talents of Neil Finn as a solo artist.

If I would have ventured a guess I would have said that "Time for a Change" could be picked as the best Enz song but it didn't even make it to this round. What about the 129 Song? That song is mind blowing ... in it's own way.

@Painaporo: I'm with you on this. It actually took me so long to vote because most of the really great songs sadly didn't make it to round 3. Frowner

I'm surprised as well. Message to My Girl is a nice song, but it's more a creature of 1984 than of Split Enz--I knew Hugh Padgham was involved before I knew Hugh Padgham was involved, if you know what I mean. Split Enz at its best had a distinctive sound--that's true of both Tim compositions and Neil compositions, but it's not true of MTMG.

The only hard decision was the Enz, because all of my favorites were already eliminated.
