I'll give my vote to Neil. Funny thing is that my fave Finn Bros song is Luckiest Man Alive. A Tim one I believe??

I voted for Neil, having been a 'Neil girl' since I was four and I love his music to bits.

And having said that I will also add Tim is totally awesome.
Pretty much Neil's music has touched my heart and soul for the past 27 years and I can lose myself in it, he really does fascinate me.

No thank you Greatfox. I wouldn't want to watch the two of you fight this out in person. I can imagine what goes on thou. Wink

So, I've been around this thread a couple of times and after taking the time to listen to Tim's solo stuff as well as Neil's and all other related projects, I prefer Neil to Tim. Tim's music is generally quite interesting with unexpected melodies that have stuck in my brain, and I think it would be really great to see him live-he just seems to have that dynamic performance edge about him. Neil would be great in a smaller venue, perhaps a solo tour I think with acoustics.

Note: The above statements may change after I see the both of them in concert sometime!

I really enjoy the music of both of them, SE is quirky and fun and wonderful stuff, but Crowded House takes the cake for me because Neil's songwriting is something else. He's in a league of his own, as far as I'm concerned. His lyrics, melodies, technique and ear for what belongs in a song and what doesn't is genius, and I always find something new, some new meaning or some random riff in their stuff.

Neil is it for me.Smiler

Precious, precious thing, you are the song that makes me sing...

For two such gifted songwriters, musicians and performers to come from the same family is exceptional.

However, Neil has my vote.

Neil's songs have always resonated with me, especially those which seem to come along at just the right time and make what I was experiencing a little easier to bear or add to the joy and/or elation. These are the moments that forever have a soundtrack from Try Whispering This, One Nil and CH attached to them. After experiencing the reunion show last year I also have some Neil "Enz moments" now. That's my connection.

I don't seem to connect with as many of Tim's songs and I do with Neil's songs. Like the other posts here, it's personal preference and what we each relate to.

I don't like this subject one bit.
I do not have a favourite. But, If I had to choose it will most likely be Tim.

Ah, this old debate huh?!
Totally subjective of course, and no answers correct or incorrect being down to personal taste. You could put a particular slant on it to make it easier like 'Commercial Success'...but that's cheating.
I could opt for the easy option and say it's a draw- Which would probably be fair, as both are outstandingly talented Musos in their own rights. But me personal preference is for Neils stuff. Having said that- Listening to Woodface or the Finn Broths albums, there's a magic there when they're collaborating! :-)

Tim for me, I prefer his songwriting and his voice. And without Tim, Neil would have never even PLAYED music! And I See Red KILLS Don't Dream It's Over.

Ooh, I don't think that's necessarily true.
Tim founded Split Enz when Neil was 15, but Neil was playing music long before that. I don't think we have Tim to thank for Neil's talent, that would have come out with or without Tim's influence.

Thanks for that MagBolt. Just presumed that cause Tim's older, he would have been an 'idol' to Neil and encouraged him to play music.

the thread that never seems to die haha

I think the proof is in the solo works, and to be frank, I find TWT and One Nil both quite boring, while Escapade is pop genius, Big Canoe might be flawed but does have some great songs (Spiritual Hunger, No Thunder No Fire No Rain, Carve You In Marble, Big Canoe), Tim Finn is the ABSOLUTE BEST ALBUM BY ANYONE EVER (plus that brilliant cover), Before and After once again has some great songs (Persuasion, Hit The Ground Running), and Say It Is So is beautiful and understated, while the much more hard edged sound of Feeding The Gods is best described as just plain awesome.
I honestly believe that while Neil is credited with most of the Crowded House songs alone, Nick and (especially) Paul brought a lot to the sound and feel of the band. It's not as though it was Neil "and band", Crowded House was not just the one musical genius, like a lot of Tim's solo stuff was.
And while I can name a few of Neil's songs that I don't really like (Truth, Dream Date and almost the whole of One Nil except for The Climber, Hole In The Ice, Anytime or Driving Me Mad), the only Tim song I ever skip over is Big Wave Rider, and only because of the fancy voice sound stuff going on. I don't even skip "Water Into Wine"
Of course most if not all of this is down to personal opinion but that's what I reckon.
I still love the both of them, though, and nothing ever quite beats them together...

but i couldn't agree more with this post (well except i don't find neil's work 'boring' as such). when they write together it's magic. but when you look at both their solo careers the proof is in the pudding. tim's work is (in my opinion) much stronger, much more creative & he just has that 'flare' of artistic qualities about him & his music. he's never released the same album twice

don't get me wrong, just like everyone else, i love both the boys, my all-time favourites. but tim gets my vote

Not just in your opinion. You took the words right out of my mouth. I voted for Tim, because although my Finn addiction started with CH and DDIO back in 1986, rediscovering Split Enz and Tim solo only a few weeks ago, it's Tim now who really strikes a chord with his beautiful, honest music and some of the best lyrics ever. None of them might be actually better, as a singer, songwriter or performer, than the other. For me it's just a matter of personal taste.

OK, I can't let Tim be so far behind in a poll Smiler so I just voted for him.

Tim was the first thing Finn-related I heard, and therefore if someone made me choose, I'd always go for him. Not that I think Neil is not talented though.

I cannot understand why Tim doesn't have a commercial success like CH has, especially after seeing him playing live.
