I don't know if this has been brought up before because I'm fairly new here, but does anyone know what music Tim or Neil listen to in their spare time? I'm curious what CD's spin regularly in their cars or whatever... I'd probably have instant respect for any artist they like because I'm sure whatever they like would be high-quality stuff.

I have always wanted to know the answer to this - whom do they admire & listen to? I know there was a radio promotion thing they did back in August (someone here had been kind enough to provide the link) where they picked certain songs as favorites, Neil Young and The Beatles come to mind as some of their picks.

From what I remember from back in the 80s when I got into CH Neil loved Deep Purple. That is the riff he plays at the beginning of the SSS video. That is all I can remember though for now.

Don't know about recent stuff? Anybody?

I seem to remember Neil being asked in an interview what song he wished he'd written. His answer -- "Clocks" (Coldplay). I don't know if one can necessarily make the jump to him being a fan of the band's general catalog, but he certainly seemed to enjoy that particular song.

Yeah, I wish Neil had written Clocks too Smiler Man, I LOVE that song!

I've heard Neil likes David Bowie and Marvin Gaye.....infact he did a marvelous cover of Sexual Healing. The Smiths are another, I believe. Tim likes the Kinks. That's all I can think of off hand.

I was wondering the same thing just recently!

I could imagine them listening to things you wouldn't expect: Jazz/Reggae/Classical

It's true about Neil liking Coldplay. The band hung out at Neil's house by the beach at Piha when they were here for the Big Day Out a few years ago. They dedicated a couple of songs to him and Liam at a warm-up gig too.

Back in 2000, Neil did a guest-host spot on Radio NZ's National Radio, playing his choice of NZ tracks for NZ Music Week:

Betchadupa Spill the Light
The Chills Song for Randy Newman
Dave Dobbyn Blind Mans Bend
The Front Lawn Andy
Emma Paki Dont Give It Up
Sneaky Feelings The Trouble With Kaye
Swingers True Or False (Id love to do a cover of that one day)
Sisters Underground In The Neighbourhood
Ed Cake Golden Man
Moana & The Moahunters Kahu

He also performed "Spirit of the Stairs" on guitar, plus a wee section of the forementioned "Andy".

A year later, Tim was a guest on National Radio's "Playing Favourites" slot. His pick of NZ tracks was:

Blam Blam Blam Dont Fight It Marsha, Its Bigger Than Both of Us
Screaming Mee Mees Sunday Boys
Swingers One Good Reason
Dragon April Sun In Cuba

As an aside, it made me laugh when I read above that Neil wishes he'd written "Clocks". The first time I heard that song, driving down the South Island's West Coast, I told my partner that I wished I'd written that. It's not a phrase I can recall saying often. Such a perfectly realised tune.

Hmmmmmm thinking of these influences, and knowing that Neil and Tim throw out a cover or two during a set may I pose the question:

What song would you most like to hear Neil (and/or Tim) cover?

This is random (and probably too obscure) but I'd love to hear Neil do "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits.

Neil should do a cover of Clocks.....
(I wish I'd written that song too)

As for what I'd REALLY like to see them cover, see my new thread that I'm just about to start as soon as I'm done this posting...

I'll call it........A Finntastic Idea Smiler

I'd love to hear them cover some Beatles tunes from The White Album or Let It Be. A few that come to mind are:

Why Don't We Do It In The Road
Revolution
Across The Universe
Two of Us - I know they've done this before, but I've never heard it.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Let It Be
Get Back

I'd pay good money to hear Neil cover "in my life" by the Beatles. He has a very Lennon-esque voice anyway, so it would make one of my favourite songs even better.

If you check out the Recurring Dream bonus live CD, in there somewhere is a cover of 'Rocky Raccoon' from The White Album. Two Of Us is on the I Am Sam soundtrack...it's a cover by Neil and his son Liam. Tim performed 'Across The Universe' live on Danny Baker's late night TV show in the early 90s, a great performance if you get a chance to see it. Neil's performed versions of several Beatles songs in different concerts both with Crowded House and solo. Secret God could tell you more... Smiler

Really? There is? Any clue as to about where it is on the disk? The last 4 tracks on my disc skip, so I hope it's before that. The other day someone else posted about Neil saying "Orgasms, yeah" at the end of "When You Come" on that disc. I never even noticed that before....lol. Not very attentive am I.

Oops...I'm wrong Red Face It's actually on the Newcastle Jam fan club CD, and also on one of the UK CD singles of Instinct. What made me think of the Recurring Dream live CD is that a couple of tracks from that were also taken from the Newcastle Jam show Smiler

Doesn't Neil like Radiohead as well?
Read somewhere (years ago) that they listened to Gomez a lot on the tour bus (can't remember if it was TWT or One Nil tour).
And Emma Paki, well didn't he produce her album?
