I'll give you some examples from my many!
Let me start with "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" just 'cos I guess you have to start somewhere.
I thought, "Lightning flash, tempers flare, 'round the horn if you dare"
was "round the hole if you dare" - as in the hole in the boat which was leaking.
It made sense to me.
The next one makes no sense at all! Guess I will still focussed on the dodginess of that leaky boat. Roll Eyes
I thought "I'll conquer and stay free" was "I'll conquer its debris ".
Did anyone else get these lyrics wrong?
Anyone wanna make me feel less foolish with an Enz/Finn/CH mondegreen of your own? Smiler

~I believe in doing things backwards~

~Under moonlight I stood wild and naked
Felt no shame just my spirit awakened~

I hate that moment when the guys take off their guitars and Matt throws the sticks into the crowd and there is no more...for tonight anyway.

I refuse to refer to these as "Mondegreens."

Naw I guess I don't really, just not much else to take a stand on this morning.

I have had many Finn-related misinterps. Some of them I reserve, since I was sad I was wrong (liked what I heard better!) and perhaps ended up swiping the wrong lyric for a song of my own. But others I suppose can be shared indiscriminately:

"Late In Rome": Tight-ass...! Remember the spotlights... Tight-ass...! Remember those late nights...

"Kill Eye": I wanna be forgiven / I want a life with children

"Anyone Can Tell": On the ground - a head! Covered in mud! / Don't step on my principal's baby...!

Not sure if that last one counts. All homophones! So technically it was not my ears but my mind that heard the wrong words.

The first time I heard this song was when it was played live at the first Finn type gig I ever attended.I didn't know any of their songs except what was on Woodface and had yet to make the Split Enz connection.
OK,enough excuses.I thought Neil was singing a "Message to Michael" Confused

Hi there!
Mondegreens are may happen very often for the foreigner Big Grin So here are mine:

DDIO: "There's a bottle ahead, many bottles are lost"

Now We're Getting Somewhere: "...and there is pain in my hart..."

Chocolate Cake: "I don't know what children the ochestra play, but it bound me sickly sentimental." (It doesn't make any sense)

Breakin' My Back: "Something's breaking my back with a weight of it all. And nothing breaking my back."

I've posted this elsewhere, but I'm happy to share if it makes anyone feel better.

Split Enz, "Shark Attack": "I'm lost at sea and I'm an amputee" was "I'm lost at sea and I'm a manatee" (for about three listens).

Big Grin I think I'm going to have to give "Anyone Can Tell" another listen tonight!

Years Go By. N. Finn.

"Holy prayers on your state of mind, one thing to be sure of as we live and die""

Kind of reckon he should have gone with that :-)

I spent several years listening to this from Kare Kare, conjuring up images of the bottoms of birdcages:

"We left a little dust / on his perching rod"

And a friend for whom I made a compilation CD remarked that he liked the song called 'I Love You Don't'.

The 'conflicting emotions' idea is quite appealing, but if you look at the lines that follow and split it at the 'wrong' place it means something else again:

I love you / don't you understand / the strength of ten men in your hands.

Despite all that, I did actually explain... probably ruined the whole thing for him Wink

That's very good! Slightly sad and forlorn. I think I might prefer that version! Wink

Reminds me of the Ancient Yulby Forest.

Ah, yesteryore of olde.

One from my brother, to whom I leant an all-CH mix tape which he listened to each day en route to police academy:

"When You Come" - and that is why, I stumble to my knees / and why / I believe in heaven

Quite beautiful really. To say to a girl, these things of you - they are why I believe in heaven.

I've got heaps. I just don't think I listen very well to the Finn's when they sing!! Smiler

Shark Attack - love's got teeth and it bites so hard (bites your heart).

Six Months - round the hold if you dare (kinda like Beajai's but I thought the hold of the boat).

I Got You - you show me (instead of reassure me)
I only just found this out during the 2006 concerts!! How long can you be singing the wrong words, I ask you! Roll Eyes

And this is the most embarrasing one of all because I still sing these words today - Red Face

Something So Strong - wounds that spread so deep, ring like the frozen ground......instead of "roots that spread so deep bring life to frozen ground."

I know it doesn't make sense but that's what I sing!! Red Face

Oh, Kazzie, my sister in Mondegreens, I also thought it was "wounds that spread so deep" - for a loooong time! Roll Eyes

My brother thought it was "6 bullets knocked me off the ground" in "I Feel Posessed", instead of "6 ft off the ground"

Thought of another one that I only just learned in 2006 (disgraceful, I know, from a fan of 30 odd years Razzer)

One Step Ahead - Love is a race won by two
your emotion, my solitude

I thought it was (and I still sing this)

Love is a race from my to
Your emotion and my solitude

Help me! Wink
