It was Countdown for me too. I was 10 and glued to Countdown Sunday arvo's before the footy came on, nothing much has changed really! I just loved it straight away and of course have loved Neil ever since too!

quote:
Who knows what really makes a hit. I mean it's not always the lyrics ("Agadoo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree..."),

Had to laugh at the above quote, my daughter is in juniour choir and they are singing Agadoo! I said "what the??... I know you're only 8 but why do they make you sing this stuff??!!!" My daughter was not impressed of my insults of the music teacher!

I reckon "I Got You" would be much better at assembly!

Maybe so Kylie S, but you don't want 8 year olds grappling with the concepts Neil sings of!

Great tune but it can be kind of hard for young children to understand WHY Neil chose to write those lyrics.
It's definitely the song that made me discover the link between Enz and Crowdie. {Only Split Enz song I liked until just 12months ago.}
First time I saw the video clip, I saw Neil and thought 'I've seen you before... somewhere' Took a while to realise 'Hey! He was in CROWDED HOUSE'

Energetic and poppy ... accessible but not completely stupid (though with some hits intelligence goes completely through the window ... Crazy Frog or the Ketchup Girls anyone?)

A couple of days I was playing True Colours from my newly purchased Enz to Enz box.
My 14 year old kid knows I'm a massive Split Enz freak.
He is more of a classical music nerd Roll Eyes and so I have introduced him to the Enz through my ENZSO CD.
Anyway, when "I Got You" came on he calls out, "I know this song. But I never realised it was Split Enz. I really like this one."
He's heard it on the radio etc, but had no idea that it was a Split Enz song. But he still loved it.
I guess it goes to show that it has universal appeal.

I've always thought there was a strong Judd influence in "I Got You." The main part of the song has that dark and quirky Judd vibe that suggests the paranoid feeling of "Under The Wheel." You can hear the parallel with lines like "It doesn't seem real / Now you're head's full of doubt."

Combine that with the huge Paul McCartney & Wings-style chorus that sticks in your head like "Band on the Run" and you have a winning formula, especially for that time.

It's a great pop song no doubt...

or something like that."

I think it's the really hooky little intro with that pulsating beat that makes you tap your feet, and the very memorable chorus which you can sing along to after only hearing it once, so it gets stuck in your head.

I guess just really hooky?

My little son couldn't even really talk, but he recognized, "I get frightened"

If June Cleaver was so happy, why did she fret so darn hard about the Beav?
