Anybody know what the deal is with the feeding of chickens as a favorite pastime? Is this an old lyric reference that I've forgotten, or some in-joke?

Well, Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen used to refer to speaking to the press as feeding the chickens but methinks the more likely reference is um... how you say... spanking the monkey, shaking hands with the unemployed, the old five on one, if you know what I mean.

I could be wrong...

I hadn't thought of that either, John, but now you mention it that makes a lot of sense vaning just listened again to Episode 3 of Enzology (now available to download/stream btw). They were talking about how they were intereviewed while in the US and constantly asked questions about NZ, what it's like living there and what you do there (as if it's another planet or something). So they came up with 2 things, the vernacular for which went right over the top of their interviewers, but one was indeed what John was referring to.

Gotta love their sense of humour! Smiler

Did they get this phrase from the same slang dictionary where they got the title "temple of low men"? Big Grin

i seem to recall that it was just a euphimism from when i was a teenager in the 80s in Aust that never really "took off" as it were. was based on the motion one's arm/wrist/hand makes when throwing the chook feed on the ground.

wil add this to my list of things i never EVER thought I'd be typing on the Enz forum...(goes straight to the top i think).

That would be pretty funny!

Pretty sweet if we could get a copy of that book. I bet we find all of Neil's ouvre sprinkled with stealth lewd references.
