On tonight 8.30pm (TV One, NZ) is 'Give it a Whirl - tonight's programme is about the emergence of Split Enz, amongst other NZ bands of the era..

"The first incarnation of many for soon-to-be-iconic Split Enz is dissected by the Give It A Whirl boffins as they tread carefully over the twisty, turny root system of that particular band's family tree."

Commentary about the programme (including the Enz) here:
http://entertainment.nzoom.com/entertainment_detail/0,1...7637-129-133,00.html

Give it a Whirl series' Website here:

Apparently there may be a 'commercial release' of this series at some point in the future.

I have recorded the 3 episodes to date, and last nights was the best so far. A good level of new interview material with M Chunn, Neil, Noel, and Tim. A lot of footage of New Faces and Buck-a-head shows. Great stuff. Can't wait til they get to the CH years.

What a fabulous series! The Enz segments have been fab and are a great companion to the Spellbound doco. Some great interview and archive footage.

While we're on the subject of this documentary -- seeing Phil Judd with the Suburban Reptiles made me dust off my copy of the AK-79 comp featuring "Saturday Night Stay at Home". Such a fun song, but the sound quality is disappointing, on that CD at least -- it sounds like it's in mono rather than stereo!

Also, Zero (Claire Elliot) of the Reptiles looked remarkably like a woman who was running a coffee stall in Auckland's Wakefield Street until fairly recently -- can anyone confirm? Smiler

They also had quite a lot of Swingers footage, and a lot of Bones Hillman (?)

Well, just to wet your appetite more. I picked up a DVD of the series about a month ago. It was in one of the bargin bins in Whitcoulls (I think).
I've yet to watch it (blasphemy!), but it contains 6 episodes and does mention that it's highlights of the series.
So there is a DVD release out there if you can find it.
And sorry, before you ask, I don't have the technology to make copies. :-(

Ooh, I had no idea there was a DVD, I only knew about the soundtrack CD.

Apparently a second series of "Give it a Whirl" is being planned.

Hi,

Sorry, I led you astray a bit. I had a look at it last night and I didn't find it in Whitcoulls, I probably found it at Real Groovy.
It's an Educational Version, "Not For Commercial Sale".
It's a double DVD with 4.5 hours worth of program.
That probably makes it a lot harder to find.
Sorry about that. Let's hope that a commercial version does come out. Maybe after this repeat screening.

There were copyright problems which delayed the commerical release of the DVD. It's been available to schools for the last year. I gather that some of the material appearing in the TV boradcast is not on the DVD.

I e-mailed TVNZ with regard to it being commercially released on DVD and they replied that it probably won't happen, given all the copyright issues concerning the dozens of songs used. I said it would be a shame if the show wasn't commercially released and they agreed.

The educational version is basically censored (i.e. a few swear words removed), so isn't much different to the broadcast version. The DVDs are copy-protected, so you won't have much luck copying them.

You were very lucky to pick up that copy, Zuf! Love the brief history of NZ music feature on it! Big Grin

I just hope I haven't got some teacher somewhere in trouble!! :-) Although I suspect it may well have been sold to the store by a student.
Seen as how it is quite rare (so to speak) I'll push it further up the list of DVDs I need to watch! :-)
