Sorry if this has been brought up before and I've missed it - but which Enz cover art do people like, say as a representation of the album title or the music therein, or of the band's state at the time?
For example, I like the painting for Mental Notes - who doesn't? - it's a classic in its own right, I think, and I wish I had a print of it to frame (I was thinking of getting a colour photocopy of the sleeve and framing that). Also that European release of the same album - with the inexplicable candy border - except where Phil is bald, Tim's haircut is updated and Rob Gillies' head is superimposed where Wally Wilkinson's once was? Very political... :-) And I think the Conflicting Emotions cover painting with it's head detachment - an interesting comment on the album title and the fractured state of the band at the time. The other one I find interesting is the Beginning of the Enz art - with the heads removed and an ampersand on the far right - maybe T.Finn, Judd and Chunn, with the '&' representing the subsequent fifteen members, perhaps? I'm really fond of the Time & Tide cover. It really fit the mood of the band at the time and obviously captured the Six Months vibe.
I'm also fond of the Frenzy cover-just the guys in a field with odd sheep walking around. |

I'd have to say Mental Notes, incredible artwork. I used to study the members faces and couldn't believe how well Phil captured them. What a genius!

What does the cover of Private Lives look like? I ordered mine, but haven't seen it.

There is a scan of the cover painting of Phil's "Private Lives" on that excellent web site, "Bitz".

Re Mental Notes - for anyone in NZ the original is in the Te Papa museum in Wellington, and it's even better!

My favorite is definitely the Mental Notes cover. A stunning painting with amazing detail that, I believe, accurately represents the atmosphere of the album.
The Conflicting Emotions cover is also excellent, as it too has remarkable detail. I agree that it seems very representative of the album title and the state of the band at the time. The theory about the Beginning of the Enz cover is interesting, one that certainly makes sense. And perhaps the ampersand was considered easier than trying to accomodate fifteen additional members on the cover. ;-) [This message has been edited by Sweet Dreamer (edited 29 January 2001).] [This message has been edited by Sweet Dreamer (edited 29 January 2001).] |

I would say that the "Conflicting Emtions" Album cover (done by Phil Judd) represents the band correctly at the time of late 1983. It shows the band has grown up and they are about to go thier differnet ways.
Though it's not my favourite album, it has my favourite song (with fav video clip) in "Message to my Girl" So thumbs up to the "Conflicting Emtions" Album cover. |

A thousand curses - I visited the Museum yesterday while passing through Wellington and was told the painting has been removed from public display until further notice |
