Getting Somewhere
Posted
The forthcoming release of ExtravagENZa will expand the officially-released (excluding promos and club releases) Split Enz live (audio-only) canon by six song titles:

Without A Doubt
Give It A Whirl
I Got You
Poor Boy
History Never Repeats
Haul Away

This has got me thinking, however, about the great songs that have never been released in a live version. My personal favourites would be:

Late Last Night
Another Great Divide
My Mistake
Kia Kaha

Any other notable omissions?

I'd add Stranger Than Fiction/Time For A Change to that, as well as Parrot Fashion Love

Time For A Change has been released 3 times (B-side 1976, Living Enz & Anniversary/ExtravagENZa) - or did you mean a medley version with STF?

Yes, I meant a performance where they performed Stranger Than Fiction then segue into Time For A Change, hence Stranger Than Fiction/Time For A Change. The only released version of TFaC from the right era is the B side to Late Last Night, and that's from Reefer Caberet and it's not the best performance.

Mostly the Mental Notes stuff (i.e. Spellbound, Walking Down a Road, So Long for Now) and anything of that ilk.

I downloaded a few of the early live songs the other day, including Amy, Under the Wheel, Lovey Dovey, etc., when and where were these recorded? I assume they'd just be the ones of Oddz & Enz.

Yes, they're from Oddz and Enz, 129, Amy and Lovey Dovey are recorded live in studio (faked as Reefer Cabaret) while Under The Wheel is live from Reefer Cabaret (Ormond Hall, Melbourne Australia 1975) and True Colours (Let's Rock) and Nightmare Stampede are live in Auckland, 1976.

I've always thought release the whole 1976 Auckland concert, it contains everything from Mental Notes and Second Thoughts bar Maybe, Mental Notes and Sweet Dreams.

The Luton-era punk classic 'Livin' It Up! (even though it may not have ever been performed). Big Grin

Hi there !! Smiler
In the SE DVD (Spellbound section) Mike gets to remember audiences burstin' up at the end of Another great divide...
must have therefore been pretty much captivating... a shame that no live version has been made available so far...
Bye

There's a small section of "Another Great Divide" performed live 1977 in Enzology, with enthusiastic audience response. This is from an audience tape. ABC Radio in Australia has recordings in their archives of "Another Great Divide" and "Stranger Than Fiction" performed New Year's Eve, 1976. I haven't heard them, but I imagine they'd be board recordings.

Interesting, pity Triple J couldn't use the live version of Stranger Than Fiction for their 'live' 1975 release instead of the ST version.

Thought I'd mention that Poor Boy and History Never Repeats were actually on Anniversary Smiler 2nd track and last track.
