Okay, this sounds weird, bear with me...I can't find any discussion of this so I could be wrong, but wasn't there some thing with the Enz where each member was identified with a particular animal? That would be sort of a informal, within-the-band designation - not like they dressed up as or anything.

All I remember was Neil was Ant. I can't recall any of the others. I'm sure I'm not imagining this memory, but I can't find it anyplace.

Sound familiar to anybody?

Tim = bull
Nigel = turtle
Eddie = horse
Noel = goat

I'm pretty sure that's right...

YEAH! That sounds right. But...did they come up with it after Mal left? I guess they must have.

Thanks, Hyacinth!

Which begs the question: what did they do with this particular, informal animal designation?

Tim made mention to it several times during the recent NZ Enz tour, usully in reference to Eddie the horse, to which Ed seemed to be demanding an upgrade to stallion. Big Grin

Reading the excerpt, it comes off more as something Tim came up with impromptu! I remembered it as more of a group effort for some reason.

I always got the impression that it was intially Tim's idea, but the rest of them liked it so much (or identified with the animals) that they all seemed to adopt it.

Its been around for a long time. I'm pretty sure I remember references to it back in the early 80's. Smiler

Good point Flicker, I'd forgotten it was in there too. It's certainly not a new thing, for some reason I'm thinking Frenzy era.

I knew this was also mentioned somewhere in an old FOTE newsletter, too...finally found it (issue #36, for those who want to know specifics!):

"Eddie was always known as the 'stallion' in Split Enz. They all had their animal characters - Noel was a goat, Nigel a turtle, Neil an ant, Tim a bull...I'm sure they gave all of us at management animal traits too (I'd hate to ask...)"

Not to take this off topic, but you must be a member from way back hyacinth? Big Grin

All my old newsletters etc must have gotten lost in one of my moves. Its for incidental information like this that you wish you still had all that stuff.

And I think Neil was the Ant? (maybe that's already been mentioned?).
