I'm in the process of seriously getting back into Finn and Enz stuff, and it's great to have this place to hang out.

I bought Dizrythmia when it came out in 77 and played it a mighty number of times. I saw the Sight and Sound gig on BBC but we had a really crap old tv at the time (We had to get up at 5.30, half an hour before we went to bed, and lick the road clean wi' our tongues), and the picture was black and white and all snowy, but I was knocked out by it.

I'm sure I remember a guy with glasses playing the spoons, and even through the snow, the close ups of Tim were so charismatic and his voice was amazing.

Anyway, Enz faded for me when I got into punk and new wave. I thought they had sold out when they gave up the make up and had a hit with I Got You (forgive me, I was young and very foolish).

Many years later I realised I liked Crowded House, slowly made the connection back to S Enz, began to notice Tim on some of the tracks on Recurring Dream.

Then it was Best of Split Enz for Christmas, Neil at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh, then his solo albums, then the Bros at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh last October. That lead to EIH and Finn, someone gave me a copy of Big Canoe.

Just recently, I bought Time and Tide, True Colours and Dizrythmia on CD.

What a great album Dizrythmia is, so fresh sounding after all this time, and when I think about all the punk/new wave bands I liked, I don't listen to any of them now bar Talking Heads/David Byrne. Moving away from Finn, that was my mistake.

Now I've just ordered the Enz DVD from Aus, and I can't wait - the Sight and Sound gig is on it! To see it in crystal clear colour!! I don't suppose it'll be in stereo, but you can't have everything.

Anyway, the point is, where is it all going to end? What other albums must I get? Mental Notes? Frenzy? Feeding the Gods?

Any words of advice/sympathy much appreciated. Please forgive me for straying but I am back to stay now. Oh, the folly of youth, and if only I had seen Enz live at the time of Dizrythmia.

Hi, Antipodean Wannabe! I became addicted to Split Enz pretty recently, three/four years ago only; in the late seventies I was too into punx (and also AC/DC, B-52's, Madness);
therefore I've no "title" to suggest which album (s) should be your next pick, but I do love The Living Enz double live... and watch out for the DVD! Since I have it I keep on playin'
it on and on... simply great, very comprehensive, you'll no doubt love it! Bye

You already have True Colours and Dizrythmia, two of my favorites ... but be aware that the DVD only includes two or three songs from the Sight & Sound show, not the entire performance.

I've always loved the Enz, and just got an ipod for my 50th birthday, I've loaded it up with Enz exclusively and have over 700 songs on it, just hit random and away I go. It' fintastic.

Short answer: it won't end. Big Grin

I see that our secret plan to infect another music fan with Enzitis has worked! HA HA HA!!! Big Grin

SPLIT ENZ
Really, you need every Split Enz album to get the full effect. No two Enz albums sound the same. They worked with so many different styles (often on the same album), pretty much mastering them all. But, for starters, in addition to what you already have, you should get the following...

Mental Notes
The challenging, yet classic debut. Quite unlike anything else the band recorded, and unique in the popular music world. Acoustic clashes with electric; folk mingles with prog rock; weird pop mixes with bizarre lyrics.

Spellbound - The Very Best Of
39 essential Enz tracks, as selected by the guys. Includes all the hits, live favourites, choice album tracks and even a few rarities to boot.

As for other related artists...

CROWDED HOUSE
Each of their albums has a different sound, and again all their albums are essential for the full effect. If you have Recurring Dream, you're off to a great start. From there...

Crowded House
Out of the blocks, Neil and the boys had an assured start to a great decade together. Virtually the epitome of classic '80s pop music.

TIM FINN
Tim's solo career got off to a decidedly spotty start, due to '80s production - although the songs were great.

Tim Finn
His last album of the '80s, and recorded without the typically indulgent production of the time, the songs still sound fresh.

Feeding The Gods
A great latter day comeback from Timmy boy. Shows the old fella still has it. How many 50-somethings can still rock like this?

NEIL FINN
Hard to choose between his two solo albums...

Try Whistling This
A great solo debut. Beautiful melodies and haunting lyrics.

One Nil
A wide range of different feels and styles. Again, Finn the Younger easily demonstrates his mastery of simple, yet effective use of the English language.

...and there's a whole lot more besides to discover, but if you start with these albums, you can't go wrong. It's a mixed bag, but mostly all great and worth finding. Enjoy, and welcome to our wonderful world! Big Grin

I too bought Mental Notes and Dizrythmia when it first came out, and I bought all the Split Enz albums (vinyl) up to and including Time and Tide (I still have them all somewhere, but I don't have a turntable!). I also saw them live in Sheffield when Waiata was the album they were promoting. I remember Tim getting absolutely p*ssed off when the crowd kept chanting for him to sing 'Charlie' and started mocking them!

I seemed to lose track somewhere (don't really know why) until one day whilst driving in my car I thought I recognized a voice. The song was Dont' Dream It's Over, but then the DJ announced the band was called Crowded House. I was sure that was Neil's voice but I didn't even know for certain that Split Enz had split!!!

I searched for Crowded House at the record shops and I was off and running again! Saw them twice in concert in Sheffield. In between songs the rapport with the crowd was brilliant.

It's weird when you look back, you can't understand why your interest lapses. Tim was always my favourite and I only have 2 of his solo recordings - Big Canoe and Before & After. How do you figure that!!

Anyway - I saw The Finn Bros in concert on TV here in the UK the other night and I couldn't sleep afterwards with the excitement I was feeling!

I searched Amazon for CD's and found I can get almost every past album although some things are different.

I'm going to enjoy collecting the whole discography on CD.

But the thing I am enjoying most is reading this Forum and rekindling past memories.
I never post on Forums, I usually just read them, but I could't resist this.
