My discs turned up the day of the first concert. Good juju.

It's taken a while to get used to Frenzy but I think it's a winner. You can see where Eddie was trying to go in '82 with the A&M remix. Betty doesn't sound much different from that mix at all (sadly for me, who prefers the original mix). I think pretty much all the others are great to listen to. Not sure if I'll ever get to the point where I consider them the "true" version but I suspect I'll play it more than the other (if that makes sense). Great to hear some of the songs play out rather than fade out too.

Corroboree was a real surprise too. A much subtler remix but the impact is great. Noel's kazoo (I think) on One Step is great. Re-sequencing helps a lot too. I don't even mind Ships as much. All in all, makes for a much better album.

Most interesting re-mix for my money is Things on True Colours. I wouldn't have emptied out the music in the last verse but besides that I think it's great. Without having played it against a guitar, my hunch is that it's been slowed down a fraction to the key of G. You can hear the count in at the beginning and you get the roll of Mal's drums at the very end. Really cool. They've mixed out Neil's chromatic run down on the guitar after the first chorus which I always kinda liked. Again, all in all, a very interesting mix.

I "think" they've brought the snare to the front on Poor Boy but maybe it's my computer.

Digipacks themselves are really cool. I didn't think I'd like them. They're really neat though - just like mini 12" vinyl.

Strangely, it's got me playing Conflicting Emotions a lot too, especially Bullet Brain and Cactus Head, which for some reason, doesn't sound so dated to me now. And even though the lyrics to the verses of No Michief still sound a little silly to me, the music track itself, and the performance, really click. M-m-m-m-mischief!!

Money well spent!

I notice that Big W have decided to range just two of the remasters:

* Corroboree
* True Colours

The good news is that they are only $20.82 each.

It's a shame they didn't decide to range all 10.

I saw a link in the online SMH to the entire remastered catalogue available on iTunes. Anybody had a look - any surprises? No way to check in NZ, as we still don't have iTunes.

My nice shiny and new copy of Corroboree arrived today. Big Grin

I see where Eddie was going with the new track sequence, alternating between Tim and Neil songs, and breaking it up with his two contributions. It could also be argued that all the strongest songs are now on the first half of the album...

The remix is more subtle than Frenzy, but it's amazing how much of a difference it's made.

Most notably the vocals are further forward in the mix and therefore more audible, but also Noel's percussion actually exists now! Wouldn't have thought anything would be buried by David Tickle mixes (a la Mallory Earl), but the remix has proven just how different this album is to True Colours!

'History Never Repeats' sounds more punchy and a lot fresher. The drumming has been exposed and that part in the middle eight (during the 'Bergen Aan Zee' guitar solo) is not a million miles away from what was on the demo of 'Outer Mongolia' that used to be on Neil's website. The song really chugs along now, and the keyboards are more to the fore too.

I am inclined to agree that 'I Don't Wanna Dance' does feature an alternate Tim vocal.

'Wail' features a add-on piece at the start before the drum beat starts. Glad there's still vocals in it!

'Clumsy' seems quite goofy now, but in an enjoyable way. This new mix makes me think that the song is Tim's equivalent of Neil's 'Things' - throwaway, yet fun. Extraneous vocals have been uncovered too - some of them were audible in the original mix, but they've really come out of the woodwork now.

'Albert Of India' - where did that drum machine come from? It starts the song off and seems to beat away throughout the song. An interesting addition to say the least...

Great packaging, again faithful to the original LP, and 'In The Wars' as bonus track works well.

I think it's a bit of a dark horse. I love it, and even more so in its new form.

One last note: gotta love that photo in the booklet from the 'History Never Repeats' video clip...Noel, Nigel and Eddie dressed up as Shriners! Classic! Big Grin

Even if you don't have an iTunes music store, you should still be able to access the Australian store through iTunes and listen to the previews.

Last I looked, they're all up there (except True Colours???) and you can hear the differences in Frenzy even in the short clips you get to hear. I'm trying not to play around too much there though, since I can't afford anything just now Frowner

The Corroboree disc is worth it for "Iris" alone. Thank you, Eddie, for giving the solo back to Neil! It's always been a great song, but I could never listen to it without wondering why Tim was screaming his harmony part in the chorus. Flashbacks of the screaming tenors in choir...

It's funny you say that, because I thought Neil's guitar solo was mixed more into the background, and Eddie's funky jazz piano chords were mixed louder on the new mix.

Apart form the bonus tracks, is True Colours any different to the remaster from a few years ago? Did Eddie re-remaster it?

Actually, I meant the vocal solo. In the chorus (especially the line "I feel desirous"), the harmony parts (especially Tim's) used to drown out Neil's melody. Thankfully, Eddie fixed that. Smiler

btw, on the many newly-revealed high harmony parts on Frenzy, it sure sounds like a female singing, rather than a male singing falsetto. E.g. Famous People, RTGITW.

Does anybody know for sure, or hear it differently?

Thanks to whoever it was in this thread that pointed out the remix of "Things" on True Colours. It's still not a very good song but the remix has improved it greatly! Totally listenable now.

I thought some vocal parts in Famous People sounded female, but on RTGITW it sounds like male falsetto to me.

Yeah, I thought they were female on Famous People!

Anyone think that a lot of the vocals on the remixes like Famous People and Master Plan sound really echo-y?

I'll be interested to see how the Rootin Tootin Luton tapes turn out. Are they going to be remixed too, or original? Would seem pointless to remix seeings and all Frenzy has already been done

feelin' all silky smooth

I think they should make the Luton tapes sound as good as they possibly can without altering the historical integrity of the music, if that makes sense? I hope that is what Eddie has done with the new discs, as well, and not added new bits.

I have not heard frenzy yet (I only have TC and Corroboree) but to me 'Things' has been brought to life and 'Clumsy' remains throw-away.

I have not yet played the original version of Corroboree and the new mix back to back but I now value 'I Don't Wanna Dance', 'Walking Through the Ruins', 'Wail' and 'Iris' more, to the point of them being (except for, perhaps 'Wail') integral tracks. On the flip side, 'Ghost Girl' is less haunting (no pun intended) and 'Albert of India' is less majestic than it used to be, certainly within the context of this new mix at least.

P.S. By the way Camus, in regards to your avatar, are you a ‘Who’ fan or is that just your sense of humour?

I'm yet to hear the new Corroboree but I've recently been beginning to love "Wail", so I'm looking forward to my next music shop.

Not Neils favourite song though! As he sings in one show... "oooooh oooooh Iris, the song with the awful words"
