Secret God![]() |
Had a thought in my head all day, after the news of Split Enz's induction into the Hall of Fame, and I think that this forum is a safe place to share it... I realise that S.E. is/was a collective band and like most great bands, the sum of its parts, including managers and people like Peter Green. So this is just my opinion, and I'd hate anyone to see it as a Finn (T) v. Judd v. Finn (N) diatribe, or try to make a fight piece. Silly.
To me, the seeding of SE was the Judd/Finn partnership; obviously the two sparked their respective creative talents into something real and wonderful. But once Phil had gone from the scene in 77, it was really Tim that kept the Enz going, gave it its first hits, and its energy, and firmed up the band line up that took it into its most productive (in terms of popularity) phase. Neil's creative contribution of course was great, in the early 80s, but it was in the context of a pre existing and productive band..his greatest contribution was CH I think, not SE. So I'm sitting in this TF forum saying that I think that TF was the main reason that the Enz lasted as long as they did, and kept creating such wonderful and still great music - whilst acknowledging fully the contribution of all the other members, particularly Phil Judd. So congratulations to him for this latest honour. And, to plagarise that swedish group ( |

The whole Split Enz story is just plain trippy if you ask me.
As Phil Judd was the one that really started it all (with writing the band's first songs, and taking on co-lead vocals, etc.) it's pretty astonishing that once he left, Tim Finn was literally able to step up and lead the band in the way he did, coming into his own as a songwriter. Credit to him for that. And then for Neil Finn to join an already established popular group and basically end up running the show and writing the hits is just freaky... how often do you see that sort of thing happening? Seriously. Is there a story like it in the history of pop/rock music? (Three Geniuses in the One Band as well!) You have to also remember that if it wasn't for Neil Finn writing I Got You, things could (And Would) be a whole lot different today. For Neil to get to the stage he did in the Enz is all thanks to Phil Judd, we tend to forget that. Not discounting Tim's contribution one bit - he was, after all, the one who held it all together for so long. When all was said and done with Phil, and the Enz needed a new guitarist, Tim must have had people say (to plagarise that Swedish group) "He is your Brother". And Neil must have been thinking (again, to plagarise that Swedish group) "Take a chance on me"... Note to Moderators: This thread might be better off in the Split Enz forum |

I agree about this topic being in SE forum, so I have moved it over. I know it is talking of Tim but I get the feeling about the whole topic will be involving SPlit Enz in whole.
