Well - I own 3 copies of Mental Notes. An early pressing of the LP, the original CD and the new remaster.

If everyone followed my example it would be well over platinum by now! Wink

I only own two copies of Mental Notes.
But I did my share, thanks to the remastering and the boxset I own three copies of True Colours, Frenzy and See you round, and two copies of all the other regular albums.

So I would say, just add a bonus track like Prophecy, and I'll be happy to buy a third copy of Mental Notes.

I've got 4 copies, the LP, the mid price master CD, the CD from the Gold boxset and the new remaster. If Eddie remixes it to 5.1 I'd certainly buy it again.

I personally own the LP, box set version, and the remaster version. Like Camus said, if it got remastered to 5.1 I'd buy it again. It's a fabulous album and I can only imagine what it'd sound like in 5.1.

A 5.1 remix would be rather noice.
I haven't got the remastered CD but I do have the original White Cloud LP, the Interfusion LP, the gold box CD, a CD-R of the Sydney demos for the album, a CD-R of the rough mixes of the album... Razzer

More on this in the upcoming newsletter- we are going to attempt to make this happen- just waiting to hear back from some of the band around the possible fundraiser auction to buy the last of the stock..one way or the other we hope to tick this off the Enz TO DO list! It's still several thousand so around $25,000 (!) (Phew).

surely a one-off concert would help push it over the line.

5:1, extras CD - demos, unreleased tracks etc etc would be cool.

even better - some new material from this lot

I guess once the auction is complete, Gryph will know how far away (or how close, hopefully Smiler) it is to the mark.

Then other options could be looked at to get MN home for the guys.

Oh I think the club will make it happen one way or the other, out of the 35,000 to achieve Gold in Australia, the club would of moved around 7000+ units I'd say (over 28 years).... so what's another 2000 (Yieks). It's going to be a push but we are determined.

Look, out of everyone I'd LOVE to see the Mental Notes line up play, and yes it has been suggested several times (internally) . I remember Neil's quote that if a one off show ever happened for that line up he'd happily play as support act!

As time goes on, it does get harder for the Mental Notes line up to reform for a show- and without airing dirty washing the Tim-Phil great divide seems to be one (not THE, but one) of the main problems. I guess till that is remedied, if it ever is (some people just grow apart) -I can't see it happening. Plus... IF the rest of the guys even want to play a show together. Phil has always said it is hard to focus on guitar and sing, so a hundred and one other reasons too. Plus if the Mental Notes lineup is strong enough to draw a crowd (I expect many "I Would Go" emails on this comment)

It's taken 33 years for Mental Notes to (almost) go Gold and that's with continued chiseling away
of copies by us and many of you- so the public's interest going by sales- has been minimal .So a live show may be limited as far as ticket sales (I'd like to think it would be a success but you never know).

But, who knows Mental Notes achieving Gold may well set some pebble rolling down a hill.... it certainly worked for the ARIA Hall of Fame. This is Split Enz anything truly is possible.

To break it down to its simplest possible form, perhaps it would just be a case of Tim and Phil accepting how they feel, and deciding not to let it stand in their way.

They only have to be strong enough to act independently of how they think and feel. Smiler

Much easier said than done, I do know that, but it can be done. If Split Enz are as determined as they have shown they are, it would be possible.

I know that's only "one" of the issues.

And to be boring and predictable, I'd be at a Mental Notes line-up show, wherever in the world it was. Big Grin

And I'll be doing my bit to get it over the line via an auction. Just have to hope that I'm fit enough to be back at work by the time it starts, and I'm assuming I will be. Can't miss this. Cool

Now that would be cool if it happened!

I can totally relate to Phil's problem playing and singing simultaneously. I can do both at the same time, but I can't to both WELL at the same time. (OK, to be honest, I can't do both *well* separately either, but I do better focusing on one or the other)

Anyway, it would be very cool seeing the original Enz lineup in concert, with Neil as opening act!!

Do you hear what I'm thinking?
Is it how you imagined?

Why not get the original band ... ie..

Tim Finn
Phil Judd
Eddie Rayner
Wally Wilkinson
Jonathan Michael Chunn
Emlyn Crowther
Noel Crombie

Into the studio to re record Mental Notes .. and give it a 21st century mix .. just think of the fun that would be had doing it .. for a band that exuded peace, love and harmony in their music and lyrics .. isn't it time that hatchets were buried and people just got the **** over themselves .. not getting any younger are you chaps .. worth thinking about?

I'd love to see that line-up do a show, but as for re-recording Mental Notes, I don't know. Smiler I just think, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Big Grin

The guys voices have all changed now. The pitch of some of the songs would probably have to be adjusted, and I just like those songs as they are.

Perhaps if the Club can get Mental Notes gold, a show with this line-up would be more of a possibility?

Or whatever. I just dream on anyway!

I agree with Texas Rose that there would be no point, Mental Notes is great, they've already re-recorded it once as Second Thoughts, a Third time?

What a waste of an enormous amount of very productive talent, give us something new.

I have to say that I partly agree & also disagree. My opinion as an Enz fan is that it would be great for the first album to get a gold award BUT I have always believed in achieving those type of awards on their own merit.

My point is, why waste $25,000 on 2000 unwanted cds while at the same time the club is trying to raise $10,000 to build a classroom in one of the poorest countries in the world when all you would end up with is 2000 cds & an award on the wall (Yes, I do realise that the $10,000 being raised is via voluntary donations from club members with myself being one of them). But like I said, the cds are unwanted until they are sold so therefor it is quite clear that the general public do not want to buy Mental Notes so the gold award would be falsely awarded because a fan club was able to manipulate the sales !!!!

I certainly agree that Mental Notes should go gold but not in this manner. Clearly the best way to make a few thousand more sales would be to have Mental Notes re-issued as a 2cd set with the second disc containing more rare songs from that era (if there are any ???) or demos or a DVD of live performances from 1974/1975 (again, if there are any available). Of course I understand that there would be costs involved in doing this but at least Split Enz & their fans can legitimately claim an award. This would also set a precedent for the other albums in the Enz catalogue. Do Split Enz & their biggest supporters need to do what others might do with their favourite artists ???
I'm pretty sure the guys from the 1975 line-up would stare at their award on the wall & ponder what they really achieved when they know that their own fan club had a lot to do with the final 2000 sales while at the same time there are 2000 cds sitting in someone's office because nobody wants them. Come on people, Split Enz are better than that, they don't need false awards, they already have the greatest musical "family tree" in Australasia !!!! What Aussie band can beat that ? Certainly no amount of awards. Look at what Savage Garden achieved & all their awards but their roots have not sprouted very far at all.

Anyway, that's enough from me. Does anyone else have any other ideas ???

There are some problems you can't put behind you or put to one side briefly. I know there are people from my past who I was in bands with who I was good friends with at the time, but now I couldn't stand even being in the same room as, let alone having to rehearse with and be on stage with. You honestly couldn't pay me enough to do it, or if you did, I wouldn't speak to them the entire time, so it wouldn't work.

I suspect there may be similar feelings in the Mental Notes lineup.
