AND........ I thought from concert memory with Tim introducing the song, it was Noel Crombie's Grandad that actually wrote Lead a Horse to Water and they jazzed it up a bit. Tim's credited with writing it on the Juddfinn site.

Okay that's me,train spotting over for now.

In the original Ninees demos, the song was called "Leaving". By the time of the Luton sessions, the lyrics and title changed to "Evelyn".

Tim is Noel's grandfather.

As far as I know, the song was written by Tim and the on-stage reference to Noel's grandfather was fictional. Maybe Noel's grandfather was fond of the "Horse to Water" expression...

When I first heard Horse To Water I thought, 'Wait a minute, I've heard that before' then I remembered, on Concert For George (Sam Brown, Joe Brown's daughter sings it) I grabbed the the DVD and had a look and it wasn't the same song, but the hook line is very similar.

The concert for George song was written by Jules Holland. Curious...

Different lyrics GH.

Horse to water
© George Harrison & Dhani Harrison

You can take a horse to the water
but you can't make him drink
Oh no, oh no, oh no

A friend of mine in so much misery
Some people sail through life, but he has struck a reef
I said 'hey man let's go out and get some wisdom'
But first he turned on me, then he turned off his nervous system

You take a horse to water but
you can't make him drink
Oh no, oh no, oh no
You can have it all layed/staked out in front
of you but it still don't make you think
Oh no, oh no, oh no

Someone I love is gotta problem
Some people thirst for truth, but he would like a drink
I said 'Hey man this could turn out to be risky'
He said 'everything's ok' as he downed another bottle of whiskey

There's a preacher out there warned me about Satan
Could be that he knows him
Cause' He acts like he's possessed
I said 'Hey man let's hear about God realisation
For a change'
he said "We ain't got time for that
First you must hear the evils of fornication"

Yes, in a fit of peak I went scambling like a fool to watch CFG to confirm the sameness - and off course, they're not the same... at all.

"You can lead a horse to water..." is a saying as old as the hills, so there's bound to be a few different songs (well-known or obscure) using the phrase.

Such as Roy Harper's 'Same Old Rock' from 1971. The first time I heard Tim sing a bit of 'Horse to Water' with Split Enz in 1993 I thought for a moment he was covering Roy's song...

The trough musta been dry by the time you got to hear Horse to Water Jaff!

Cheated I'd like to hear again, as well as Message Boy. Do love that song, glad Neil played it the other night.

Hope Neil's tranferred some of those cassettes on to something else to archive.

So I've been trying to obtain a copy of every Split Enz recording in its best possible format. Which officially released songs have never been released on CD?
So far I don't have Message Boy, Hypnotized, Holy Smoke, Livin' It Up, or the slightly different versions on the A&M Frenzy. Are these all Luton tracks?
Are there any other songs that are on vinyl but not CD? I'm not talking about unreleased demos and stuff like that.
(MY albums collection includes the gold and silver box sets, the 2006 remasters, and a handful of 45s including the songs mentioned above (with the exception of Livin' It Up) but if I could get them on CD that would be awesome.)
Any help?

They're all Luton tracks and should be on the upcoming release - whether on the retail version or only on the fanclub version remains to be seen.

Message boy was a b-side to 'I See Red', hypnotized was a b-side for 'I Hope I Never' and Holy Smoke & Livin' it Up' were on teh A&M Frenzy

The only other Luton track that has been released on vinyl is an early version of Next Exit (also from Luton) - it was on an Australian vinyl compilation called More Hits & Myths (what was the story on how that version got out Jaffa?)

Hopefully Gryph can come through with the tracklisting for the 2 versions of Luton soon...

"More Hits and Myths" was a New Zealand-only release put together by Mike Chunn, I believe. Its inclusion on this LP (circa 1982) was probably the reason why (the re-recorded) "Next Exit" was overlooked in 1983 as a single release in NZ.

There are a few live B-sides never released on CD as well - "Time For A Change" (Aus/NZ "Late Last Night"), "I See Red" (on "Never Ceases To Amaze Me") and "Missing Person" (UK "Poor Boy"). "Missing Person" is from the live Hammersmith LP released to UK radio - arguably the rest of that promo LP is "officially released".

The Aus/NZ version of "Late Last Night" has technically been released on CD (the original "History Never Repeats" Best of but it was a rather poor transfer from vinyl, so to my mind is still waiting a proper CD release.

I understand there is still some doubt as to whether "Livin' It Up" is from Luton - Jaffaman keeps on forgeting to ask Eddie Smiler, but as you say, all should be revealed soon.

Probably should also include the 12" extended version of "I Walk Away"

Can't think of anything else.

The discography in the Stranger Than Fiction book would have you believe so, but no - in fact it's just the album version of 'Doctor Love'. A shame it's not extended, really.

Yeah, that is a shame. I actually like the song, it's pretty catchy and danceable.
