I've voted - I went for the line up but without PJ.

I was disappointed to see that so many (well, 6) feel that they will never reform. I sincerely hope they are proved wrong (and I mean that in the nicest possible way Wink )

I would like to think that PJ would be in it, but I can't quite see it Frowner

Do you know something we dont Jaffa?

I think for this to really work it would need to be a kind of one-off - a few shows in NZ - and in Melbourne - preferably at Dallas Brooks Hall (site of so many early enz concerts)

This would have to be marketed to the oldies like me because anyone wanting to bop to 'I Got You' may reinact audiences booing early enz for not being dancable.

Perhaps there could be a Novelty Act as an opener!

Actually, after this poll was first posted, the Mental Notes line-up of the Enz DID perform together at the 30th Anniversary party on the TVNZ Holmes show - without Phil and Wally, but with the addition of Rob, Neil and Geoff Chunn.

Nope. I just sense that it's time. When I met everyone two years ago for the Enzology interviews, everyone expressed how fond they were of the music and that they were proud of their achievements.

Wounds of old are healing. It's just a hunch (or maybe it's the way I sit) but I think we'll see them all on stage again one day. Now, if we could just fly Miles over to join them...!

This small article was in the back of the HIT magazine from today's Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper:

PULLING ENZ TOGETHER
Is a Split Enz reformation looming? Drummer Noel Crombie joined Neil and Tim Finn on stage in Melbourne on Tuesday to play Split Enz's Dirty Creature.
The Finns also played Enz hits I Got You, Message To My Girl and Six Months In A Leaky Boat.
Split Enz will soon release a live album, recorded in the early 90's.
Tim Finn told HIT he'd be up for an Enz tour of Australia.
"Everyone's into it. There are no plans but things tend to just happen."
Crombie added, "A tour is a definite possibility. A lot of Australians would like to see the band reform. Luckily we're all still friends and enjoy playing together."

I think it's time to get a little bit excited.....

I hope you are right Jaff. Dont see the need for Miles - thats going too far back for me.

Personally I would like to see them do a follow up to Mental Notes then perform this in concert. Recon this would be way more appealing to Phil.

Be great if Noel could resurrect his old penguin look and stand still (leaning to one side) for the whole concert - this was always a baffling addition to the whole stage act.

It'd be nice, don't envy Phil having to learn all the songs again. Hasn't he said in the past that he can't remember anything about the Swingers songs, and that's five years later than MN!

I just hope that if this happens, that it wouldn't be like the 21st Century Schizoid Band (past members of King Crimson (minus Robert Fripp of course) playing old KC tunes) as they certainly were a shadow of their former selves, as were ELP when they reformed in the 90s. Everyone goes on about Tim's voice, try listening to Greg Lake these days, big drop in quality.

When they did get together for the 30th webcast from Neils basement most of them were there. Tim sounded flat on the early material and more comfortable with more recent songs. One of the highlights of the early work was Tims voice and his great range. Recent reports are that he's sounding good singing Time for a Change as Finn bros so who knows.

An interesting idea with all this talk is the following:

Eddie remaster Mental Notes - 5:1 sounds good to me.

Early Enz reform for a few concerts and get the early act on film and release it on DVD as part of new MN package.

Invite Neil to join in if Phil isnt interested - having it all come full circle with Neil watching on as a 13 year old fan.

Enz include some new material from Phil as well as some unrecorded stuff from the early dayz.

Perhaps with all of this + a Novelty Act Mental Notes can finally reach the sort of audience that it could and should have.

Did I mention a holographic version of the album cover?

I think the flatness of Tim singing the old songs is due to unfamiliarity with the songs. How many times does he sing Dirty Creature and Six Months (both performed in the webcast) compared to Maybe (the only old song aside from 129 I can think of that they performed)?

Speaking personally I can't see any need for the rest of the Enz to get in on Novelty Act. Phil has done a superb job on the songs that I've heard and I have to (respectfully Smiler ) disagree with you Gideon, they don't sound like demos to me. What would the other Enz contribute to them? The arrangements are fine and complex enough as they are. I can't hear Tim singing any of them either.

DVD of a MN reunion would be great. A reunion is the only way I can see enough interest being generated to remix and re-release MN (hopefully expanded) as it is the lowest selling Enz album.

Ha! I'll ask Phil to start on that 3D cover now.

OK. Firstly, I should point out that I don't have any inside information on Enz reformations. As far as I know, nothing at all has been planned. But, gathering from what I've read here and elsewhere, if there was an Australasian tour, it would most likely be the same line-up that played at the Arias.

I could see a "Mental Notes" line-up performing a few special shows, including the Phuddster, but I imagine a tour would be unlikely. Incognito - wouldn't you like to see Miles playing violin on "Time for a Change" and "Spellbound"? OK, the chances are slim, but I would be in HEAVEN just to hear him play on stage with the guys. Being three years old in 1973, I missed him the frist time around. Hey, you never know.

I guess Miles deserves his dues - wasn't it him that came up with the STF riff? Perhaps he could arrange some apt string arrangements ENZSO style for this re-union we are going to provoke.

Jaffa - if Phudd has overcome his reluctance to be part of this kind of thing, then all surely its all systems go. Why dont we just line it up and invite them all along?

Camus, I agree with you re Phils new stuff - its great on its own. I am sure though that he has plenty to spare for the enz.

I guess with the new live album out it makes sense for a similar line-up to tour but this does not interest me as much as them re-visiting their original vision and bringing this back to life.

Not quite on the subject but there was some related news in the Herald Sun (Melbourne) today. 3 articles infact. One quoted Tim & Noel (who played Dirty Creature with the Finns at Tuesday's gig) as saying:
Tim "Everyone is in to it (a reunion gig). There are no plans but things tend to just happen"
Noel "A tour is a definite possibility. A lot of Australian woul like to see the band reform. Luckily we're all still friends and enjoy playing together.

The 2nd article was about a all female Finn tribute album "She Will Have Her Way" being released in September.

The Finn Brothers gig was at the top of the Hot list, which said "Amazing: can we have a Split Enz reformation next, please?"

The power of rumours!

No-one seems to think this is a bad idea. Thing is its not like a pop band reforming to re-live their glory days - their music always seemed to me to be more appropriate for the age they are now. Who is going to complain about not being able to dance to Stranger than Fiction now?

I say do it now before we are all like blind men crying about all the virgins that are dying...

Think a Christmas show complete with floating red bag and Noel as Santa would be the go (anyone remember this one?). Xmas present for the fans.
