Looking on eBay I came across a copy of 'Maiden Australia' which has Next Exit as the first track. Somewhere in the back of my head I vaguely recall that Next Exit originally came from the Rootin' Tootin' Luton tapes and that an early version made it onto an obscure Australian compilation album... does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't think it is 'Maiden Australia' as its release date was around '82 and the Luton tapes were around '77. Also I found an LP called 'Brainwaves' which according to the cover includes Noel Crombie, Phil Judd, Nigel Griggs and Eddie Rayner and according to the seller also includes Neil Finn and Paul Hester. I've never heard of it... anyone out there who has?

I'd say the version of Next Exit on the Maiden Australia LP is the single release, (Which is on Rear Enz from the 80s box set) that's about the time it was a single.
According to the fan club discography "Brainwaves" was a special 1986 Australian charity record to benefit the unemployed. It featured Phil Judd, Noel Crombie, Phil Judd, Michael Den Elzen (Schnell Fenster), Neil Finn, Eddie Rayner, and Paul Hester.

Maiden Australia is definitely the later single release - a bunch of copies showed up in stores in the UK in the late 80's in the bargain bins. Pretty sure most of the copies I saw were cheap cut-outs with a rather alarming warp to the vinyl as well, but this was the first time I'd heard of Next Exit, so I bought it anyway.
Everything else on the album was pretty forgettable I think, and I'd advise going for the Enz box set instead if you get a chance.
Talking of rare vinyl, just managed to find an original vinyl of A Reefer Derci which is in good condition and at a bargain price too! My best find was a copy of the Aussie original I See Red in the p/s and with Message Boy on the b-side. Bought it in a job lot with about 10 other Enz records for about 30-40 quid, in it was the green vinyl fanclub xmas disc too, all in MINT condition.

The A Reefer Derci LP along with possibly For You/Split Ends are probably the only things left on my serious want list. If I saw the Things 45 going for a decent price i'd pick it up.
You can be lucky if you keep looking Raul - You tend to find things on the weeks when everyone else who wants them and who's looking has it. I got a copy of "Mental Notes" on Whitecloud in Mint Condition for pennies about a year or 2 ago.
Isn't Dave Dobbyn's D.D. Smash on Maiden Australia? It was a pretty catchy pop song called "Outlook for Thursday." I think Mental as Anything were on that album too.
I think DD Smash was on there, but at that time I didn't know Dave Dobbyn at all. It was the Enz track I was after. It's a bit like when my friend got a 2nd hand copy of A-Reefer-Derci - I think we tried listening to the rest of the double album once, but never again.
now I'm on a different continent and all my vinyl is a thing of the past. Can't really say I miss it

As far as I remember on my copy of Brainwaves there was a sticker over the original list of band members with a new list. I couldn't tell you off the top of my head which ones were on the sticker, but there must be a bit of a story behind that. Does anyone know why the lineup changed?
