how is the luton version of "next exit" different ? |

The Luton version is a totally different recording, recorded 5 years before the single version. It's just a better all round performance. The arrangement is slightly different with a grungier sound. From memory I think some of the lyrics may be different too. Certainly it's a much more satisfying listen than the single version, which is like a neutered version of the (luton) original.

"Oh, woe is me" on Luton instead of "Oh, to be free"
and, "I might just do away with myself" instead of "I might just go away by myself" Luton is much better. Extra verses too. One that goes something like: "see what people get back in life, power, money, and a house and a wife they won't change my mind" I don't think the 1983 version is as bad as Stranger Than Fiction says. I do like the last chorus of the 1983 version with the "oh,oh,oh" descending background vocals and Neil's guitar lines. Both of those things are better than the original but net, net the Luton version wins in my book. |

The full Luton tapes have never been released, there's always talk of a fan club release, but it's yet to happen.
Some Luton recordings have been released on the A&M version of Frenzy, now long out of print, apparantly in the northen hemisphere it is quite easy to find on LP second hand. Hypnostised, Carried Away, Hermit McDermit, Message Boy and Semi-detached have all ben released as B sides, though again, probably only in Aus and NZ would you easily find them second hand. Hermit McDermit and Semi-detached were released on Spellbound best of that is still available, remastered on CD. The luton Next Exit has only been released on a NZ compilation called More Hits & Myths, Vol II AFAIK and was LP (possibly cassette) and long out of print. Not much help I know |

Does anyone know what Neil's involvement in the Brainwaves project was? Did he sing lead, provide backing vocals or just take part in the backing track?

I think Neil was a part of the Brainwaves project but I don't think you'd know it unless you read the liner notes. If memory serves me right, Noel was the most prominent in this project. A dreadful piece of music, with terrible lyrics (something about watching the Brady Bunch for the 10th time) - even as a teenager I thought it was a waste of tax dollars, however noble the motive. A similar venture that Neil played a very prominent part in was "We Are Young (with everytying to live for)". Same deal - taxpayer funds used to write/record/promote a song that urged kids to stay off drugs. Musically, one of the better efforts at this kind of thing but that's not saying much since the bar is so very low. All in all, I thought it was a pretty lousy song. I think Jenny Morris was on it too. Maybe Do Re Mi too??? Suffice it to say, please add the obligatory "just my opinion" disclaimer and smiley faces to all the subjective bits... |

Hi, I'm new to this site, so sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. I've been an Enz fan since the early eighties.
I have a recording from an FM radio program in about 1980. I need help identifying one of the songs. The announcer says something about "Split Enz - Waiata", but I can't find the song on that album. The lyrics include "You like control, and you decide, the game of situations, This is your life of luxury..." Is this a Split Enz song? If so, is it on Waiata (I know, Corroboree). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi CKD.
The song is "Luxury" by New Musik, not Split Enz. |

Dude, Thanks! I've been obsessing on finding the artist that did that song since the eighties. Thanks again.
Everyone in Oklahoma thought I was weird in the late seventies and early eighties because I liked Split Enz. Then "I Got You" came out and they understood. Funny how now they would be close to mainstream (only much more talented). |
