Thought I ask this question to fans of the Finns and the Beatles (there seems to be alot of them)...
What is the most Beatlesque Finn song?

For me...
Things, the vocals oh so echo the Lennon/McCartney/(occasionly)Harrison harmonies.

What about the rest of you?

Bono

Don't know if anyone else thinks this, but Elastic Heart semi-reminds me of Tomorrow Never Knows. Just my thoughts after listening non stop for 3 weeks........

"What's The Matter With You" makes me think of the Beatles on synthesisers ... and "Not The Girl You Think You Are" sounds very John Lennon-ish to me

Update 12-7-01 - I've just listened to "Suffer Never" for the first time. That jagged guitar line at the end reminds me of "Helter Skelter".

FINN = BEATLESQUE ???
The only time it really hit me was NTGYTYA. Apart from that, at least, vocally they DON'T sound similar at all, esp. in comparison to the tone/flavour/basic sound of Lennon & McCartney's voices.

Songwriting style/structure/vocal style & method/quirks/syllable & tongue phrasing ??? Definite YES
General vocal & overall SoUnD[/i] ??? a big NO.

As Neil or P Hester said, it's lazy journalism/analogizing/commentating them as Beatles (but hey we proudly all do it)
IMO T & N Finn's basic VOCAL/Voice sound are unique and to me that's the most essential element in music with lyrics.

the song that first came to mind for me is "in my command", because of the vocals, but then i saw jose's choice and agree with that, too.

Normally, I steer clear of "Beatlesque" comparisons, but I have to mention the piano and vocal harmonies in "Last Day of June."

Ever since Lennon got inspired by the sound of a passing siren, the "du-da" refrain turned up in everything from "I am the Walrus" to "Hey Jude", "Imagine" and "C'mon People".

"Last Day..." was my favourite Finn song for a number of years before I even thought of it being Beatley.

"Elastic Heart" actually sounds very similar to some of Roy Harper's recordings - the vocal harmonies, guitars and production.

Intresting thought.

Just imagine closing your eyes will playing "Together Alone" an d think of Neil's Vocals harminozing with...
John Lennon's vocals????

I think it would take TA to a whole new level. Now that's Beatlesque!

I can barely listen to a Neil-penned song in the presence of my husband without him yelling out "A Day In The Life." I don't know how, but there seem to be a large handful of songs I think Neil wrote (or maybe Neil and Tim together) that ALL seem to have elements of "A Day In The Life." The most obvious one is the lone piano chord that comes in between verse bits in "Four Seasons In One Day," though the whole of that song really is McCartneyish.

So that's probably my vote for mostly clearly Beatlesy.

...and I was thinking that "Mind Over Matter" reminds me a lot of "Helter Skelter". They're good examples of what happens when pop bands do heavy metal and can't pull it off. :-)

I dont think elastic heart sounds anything like Tomorrow Never Knows....Apart from the fact that they both have singing and they both go for more than 30 seconds.

I always thought the vocal on "Mean to Me" had a Lennonesque sound. Also the 12 string on Pineapple Head sounds a little like Norwegian Wood. Razzer

I thought i was the only one who found Finn-Beatles similarities... I hear them all over the place. How about the riff & melody in Ships compared to Doctor Robert... and the "it's the story of my life" line in Stranger Than Fiction... She Will Have Her Way, that line "I'm not the old girl I'm someone new, she said..." that's very John Lennon. Also being in the unique position to have heard most of the Beatles stuff I know after getting into Enz, I'd like to add that I always found I Feel Fine to be very enz-like. And it's not a bad thing that there's so much Beatles influence in Finn stuff... i mean, come on, if you're alive, you've probably heard the Beatles.

Wow, it's important to read the lyrics.

It still sounds like John Lennon both ways.

I guess nobody's adding to this thread anyway.

Saw Neil on the 7:30 Report, ABC Australia, and the interview person (also presenter) said to Neil that he had been listening to 'Not The Girl' on the way to the interview and it struck him by how it was so much like Lennon. Neil replied by saying:
"I'm very flattered. It's a very flattering remark. But it can still be... annoying, because some people have remembered me and bought Crowded House or Split Enz records because it sounds like John Lennon or Paul McCartney... or The Beatles".
Paul has also said "There's no pint comparing us (CH) to the Beatles... there were 4 of them, there's only 3 of us"
I think these 2 comments pretty much sum up this topic.

As Elmer said, "Kill Eye" is very Beatles-esque. . .I noticed that the first time I heard it. Also, "Locked Out" seems to have some of that Beatle-like energy to it. "Four Seasons in One Day" probably sounds the most like the Beatles. And I have to say, when I first heard "You're Not The Girl You Think You Are" I immediately thought "Beatles," but then I realized it actually sounds more like something from Nilsson; anyone remember him?
