With my iPod loaded up with all things Enz & Finn (especially when it's on Shuffle) I keep hearing all sorts of rarities that I think are one song, but turn out to be a demo that turned into something else on a later release (e.g. 'Mr. Catalyst' & 'Spiritual Hunger')

This has got me thinking - what songs can you identify that had their roots in another song or demo?

To start things off (going by memory here, so I'll take the easy ones)...

Bergen Aan Zee > guitar riff was used in 'History Never Repeats'

The Instrumental > parts showed up in 'I Wouldn't Dream of it'

Murder > Firedrill

Mr. Catalyst > Spiritual Hunger

Remember When > track on Steel City ('Glide'?) which also turned into something on Say It is So I think (don't have that album, so I'm not sure)

Everything I Do (I do for You) > Things (more like a name-change that one. Other name changes include 'Late in Rome' > 'Serge'
and 'Fall Out With the Lads' > 'Voices' (or did the lyrics change substantially as well?)

'Your Inspiration' & 'Love & Success' > I Walk Away, with other bits cropping up in 'Can't Carry On'

I'm sure Recurring Dream had its roots in an Enz demo as well (possibly one of the 2 that led to I Walk Away, but my battery is too run-down to check just now)

This list would get a lot longer if you included Tim's solo stuff (his songs seem to go through a lot of evolution, especially with bits & pieces cropping up in songs years later). And Crowded House did a bit of riff-recycling themselves (though not as much as Tim as far as I know) so maybe we can open it up to those tracks later, but for now, what do you think? Can you shed some more light on the origins & evolution of the Enz' songs?

I'd be particularly interested in finding out if any of those unreleased song titles in Mike Chunn's book ever turned into something else in later years.

Del.

Yes, remember When was rewritten on Steel City as Glide, and Take It Green was rewritten on Steel City as Where I Live. The melody of Remember When is quoted in the song Say It Is So. Outer Mongolia also became part of Firedrill. Catherine Wheels was demoed in rehearsal for Frenzy, as were parts of Dirty Creature.

Been There Done That off Tim Finn's eponymous album was demoed with Split Enz, apparantly as was the basic melody of Disembodied Voices. One of the Harlequin demos became a song in Les Patterson Saves the World as well, not sure which one though.

The instrumental bridge from "Fire Drill" had also been used previously in another unreleased song, "Outer Mongolia". Not sure whether "Murder" preceded "Outer Mongolia" or not.

I'm fairly sure Outer Mongolia predates Murder, I may be wrong, if I am I'm sure Jaffa will correct me Smiler I've heard a Ninnies version of Outer Mongolia and also a Split Enz version. It was a great song, pity it's never been released anywhere "In Outer Mongolia" so catchy and weird.

I did not know about Take it Green being transformed into a Steel City track as well. I'll have to give that another listen I think.

Another couple that I forgot to mention are all Eddie related. Bergen Aan Zee's melody was used on the Rikki & Pete soundtrack, and both Albert of India and Abu Dhabi showed up as extended instrumental versions on his Horse CD. Being instrumentals though, I can't remember the track names just now... I really should finish loading up my iPod so I can check these things when I want to...

Completely re-written lyrics, but Neil retained the same arrangement.

Sorry Gav, the melody and the chords of Fall Out To The Lads is different. Elements of the chord progression and melody made their way to Voices, but Fall Out With The Lads is not Voices with different words.
