This is the quintesential ENZ to me (shame Emlyn wasn't there, though Mal's drumming is superior during "Woman Who Loves You")... Infact, that live performance, Eddie's playing, Tims vocals, are all better than the studio version...

In the Split ENZ book, it mentions that Paul McCartney really enjoyed "Charlie" from the performance (and you can see Tims acoustic guitar hiding in the wings) Wink

So that means, Let's Rock, Woman Who Loves You, and Charlie were in the set... What else was played? Time For A Change? Jamboree?

Any info'd be much appreciated Smiler

When was this broadcast and does anyone have a copy they can share as I have never heard this show?

I have posted a request for trades in the other section (Wanted/trades area) as i have NOTHING in my collection of live or demo material that might be floating around in the Frenz trading circles.

Any help who be greatly appreciated for the Enz newbie!

Cheers,
Jay

I'm beginning to worry that I've worn that segment of my DVD out!

It draws me in every time: I hang on every note, every one of Tim's facial expressions, and I look forward to every cue. I like to think that this is a shining example of Enz in full flight.

And Noel, as Tim put it: "champion of the spoons, a suave and disciplined hero" - what more can I say? The man is a spoon prodigy!

I'd love to hear from anyone who's seen the rest of the show...

Crowded Dreams... Crowded Dreams... What was that you said about me being a progidy...

For anybody who's heard the entire Sight and Sound, when could this possibly be? Does Noel speak to the crowd at some point?

Hi bwig
Noel pretends to speak to the crowd- Tim introduces him but he makes out the mic doesnt' work so he never actually speaks. It's very funny to watch!

I've watched and heard various copies of these tapes in friends' collections over the years. On the whole the video quality is OK as it's usually from a 2nd/3rd generation copy. However there definitely are some excellent quality complete audios of the show out there.

I remember watching that series of Sight And Sound back in the 1970s - the picture was broadcast on BBC 2 TV, while the stereo audio was simultaneously broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on FM (or VHF as the BBC still called it then). You had to put your speakers either side of the TV to get the full effect. Hence the name Sight And Sound Smiler

What I would give for a DVD of the full show.

I remember being knocked out by the performance. Sadly, it was on long before video recorders were found in every household Frowner

I still don't get why oh why the BBC released a couple of tracks for the Spellbound DVD but not the whole thing. As a licence payer, I am very annoyed by this behaviour. Mad

This sound very "Points of View", (gives lopsided Big Grin and Wink a'la Anne Robinson. And I quite agree

A trawl through the archives of the forum will give you the answer - money!

The BBC own the rights, the DVD was a commercial, non-BBC venture and they wanted something horrific in fees for Peter to license the footage. They charge by the second so, considering that the 2 tracks on the DVD are 2 of the longer ones from the broadcast (and 2 of the best performances IMHO) we're could consider ourselves lucky we got anything really.

Here's hoping any potentially forthcoming Enz remasters might pave the way for some more rarities like this getting the release they deserve (but I'm not holding my breath Frowner )

Out of interest, did Noel rarely talk to the crowd?

I mean, in Extravagenza, Tim makes a big song and dance about Noel actually saying something... "HE'S TALKING!!"

The original Noel routine has been lost in time. In the early days Noel would stand at the side of the stage and barely move for the whole concert. It was quite surreal. The silence and stillness would only occassionally be broken for the odd tap of a triangle or some other minor odd percussion effect. Then at least once during the night he would launch into an animated spoon solo or hendrix-style guitar freak out (including playing with his tongue) and then proceed to spit out his teeth over the stage.

Because of this he earnt himself cult status.

Noel tended to become more and more "normal" over the years which I think was a pity.

Question for Jaffa...

There's a Split Enz Sight and Sound DVD for sale on ebay, however the seller states that the disk doesn't come in a proper cover. The artwork will be included in the purchase.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Split-Enz-Sight-Sound-1977-Concert-...QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Does this sound like an unofficial bootleg, or a copy?

Cleary just a copy made by the seller, looks like an easy way to get ahold of the full broadcast though. He's even got a few other Enz discs..

Thanks Withnail Big Grin

I presume that if there was an official release of Sight and Sound, we would all hear about it. Because I don't know the history of Sight and Sound etc, I wasn't sure whether this could have been an official copy which just happened to be floating around. I don't even know whether official copies do float around, or have ever been available.

Actually, Anselm's post makes it sound as though there are no official versions available at all Frowner (I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong on that score Razzer )

Hi,
I got my copies of all the concerts from this seller.
They are transfered from vhs to dvd-r so the quality is not great. The sight and sound is pretty bad quality comparred to the stuff on the Split Enz dvd but it is still worth having as it's such a great concert.
The other one's are better quality and good concerts also. Worth adding to the collection!
Hope this helps

Hi, there !! Smiler
Listen, the Sight & Sound portion included in the DVD makes everyone cry for the complete
performance to be brought to level and issued on a "dedicated" DVD, perhaps addded with
any further material from those days, if at all available (interviews, appearances, etc.)...
I'm booking four copies for myself + friends !!
Bye

There's always the option of licensing the entire Enz segment directly from BBC. I can contribute a few quid.
