Tim's Jolted from the oddz and enz cd is one of my favorite Split Enz songs ever-a real gem.I really think that if this song was released as a single back in 78/79 it could of been a hit-or at least a cult hit by now.Perfect song for that era.New wavish vibe, somewhat dark sounding and a verse that is as catchy as the chorus.Eddie Rayner musters up some great synth sounds too.
So what do you think? btw this is my first post on this forum.I've been hooked on the Enz ever since I saw the I Got You video on US cable tv back in 1981-82 ish. This cable show would also regularly play the Late Last Night video.I'll admit I was actually a little frightened yet completely intrigued by this video. It's pretty unbelievable that they played that video at all-let alone on American tv.However this was pre-MTV.Music videos were scarce back then.Carry on. |

Welcome Dennis.
Personally, I always thought Jolted would have made a great ad for the Jolt cola...a little obvious right? btw, always thought the Masterplan chorus would have made a great ad for Mastercard...still would... |

This thread deserves more replies; I agree, Jolted had the potential to be one of the best ever Enz songs had it been properly finished and it is still one of my faves as it is. As a matter of fact the era post Dizrythmia has a lot of alternate reality potential and it's one I've day-dreamed about on more than one occasion. I'd actually go as far as to say that there are little snippets of Enz history littered through their career that do not fit quite comfortably into the scheme of things. It is both frustrating and fascinating at the same time. The latent and oddly haunting genius found in the eerie sounds in an otherwise stripped-back song like No Bother to Me hints at a pristine weirdness that could have seen them develop into a critically claimed albums band if their overwhelming desire to be different and too selfconsciously arty had been appropriately reined in at an earlier stage. Then, later, about when Phil leaves or just before, that stripped-backed but still arty style briefly returns in a few demos and stuff but Tim and the others prefer to continue like nothing much has happened with Dizrythmia and after that things start to get a bit ragged. Their transformation to a Pop band was too forced in the end IMO and it seems that they lost something despite how much I love True Colours. What this exactly has to do with Jolted is the fact that there were a number of songs written that suggests a different and darker path could have been taken with songs like Jolted , Creature Comforts and even the later They Won't let My Girlfriend Talk to Me given to Jimmy and the Boys. I would love them to have done a kind of Proto-Goth/Music Hall kind of hybrid album in which the horns were used wisely and very sparingly. _______________________ Bar the whoo-bar! |

The track has a brilliant jerky sound to it, some weird hybrid of their old style and their new sheen maybe?
I remember thinking when I heard it, that the lyrics needed work. But it was kind of an unfinished song though? -- > ~ Mr. Sadly knows some of our members feel rescued by the Intriguer... |

I guess so, all the "Whah, Whah, Whah, Wah!, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah"s would have become an extra verse, surely.
Yeah...basically what I meant was that they could have made an album or two that kept the mood and experimentation of their early work with more of a New Wave aesthetic. It could have been great. I never liked the abrasive horns for instance or the clowning about with the vocals in songs like Spellbound and Lovey Dovy (although I did love Tim's basic effected style). _______________________ Bar the whoo-bar! |
