Getting Somewhere |
There was a lot going on in this episode so this list of audio rarities excerpts will be very incomplete. I'm only listing songs I can identify at this time. There was quite a bit of backstage/hotel banter between the group members as well. Also several examples of Tim's between-songs rhymes. Biggest shock - Phil Judd saying he had only listened to Mental Notes once in the last 20 years (but enjoyed the experience).
Tiny Tote (Max Factor eyeshadow commercial - nice tune) Stranger Than Fiction (live) Lovey Dovey (live) Walking Down The Road (Mental Notes sessions) Under The Wheel (Mental Notes sessions) Time For A Change (Mental Notes sessions - demo) Spellbound (Mental Notes sessions) Maybe (Mental Notes sessions) Mental Notes (Mental Notes sessions) Amy (Darling) [Mental Notes sessions] Mental Notes radio promo Prophecy (live, NZ) Spellbound (??live) Titus (live - very good) 129 (live - with Gillies in the band) Late Last Night (rehearsal - Tim & Phil swapping vocal lines) Late Last Night (7" version) ??True Colours (live Enz of the Earth, NZ 1976) So Long For Now (live Enz of the Earth, NZ 1976) |

I didn't catch the first song at all. The second last song played live was Nightmare Stampede, not True Colours, I think. I was so thrilled to hear Titus live (wow!)

methinks the news went on a bit too long last night, the repeat started with wally talking before it went into 'stranger than fiction'.
the hi-light for me was the 'demo' late last night'. All in all, more of a classic albums approach (as the rest will probably be) than the catch-all first episode, highly enjoyable. i also lost the feed just before wally was asked to leave the band, so missed the reasoning. hope this isn't the end of the rnzi broadcasts |

RNZI broke away from National Radio for their own Pacific News which was longer than the domestic news bulletin, hence you missed the first few minutes of Enzology.
With the end of the Summer holiday season, RNZI is back to normal programming for the Pacific Islands next week. If the listed schedule is correct, this means Enzology will not be relayed from now on. |

Was going through some photos tonight and found this one of Enzology interviewees Nigel Griggs and "Mental Notes" producer Dave Russell in July 2003. This was cropped for the Enzology website, leaving Dave out of the picture. Time to make ammends!
I'm not sure that Dave and Nigel had met before. After our taped interview that morning, Dave kindly dropped me off at the train station and Nigel picked me up from there. |

quoted bit 'LATE LAST NIGHT (home demo, Auckland 1975, Phil on main vocal & guitar with Tim on BVs - with extra verse!)' This came as a very happy surprise in my mp3 player!! Thanks for sharing the pics Jaffa. Is that a Vdub ? 2 smacks whoever spots it first, a mini is only worth one. Games you play to entertain kids. ____________________ people hear what they see |

I've got dibs on it being a Volksie.
The vent grill pattern and the top of the light gives it away and the Mini doesn't have the flared wheel arches either. That's my useless information contribution quota for the day exceeded. See ya! ...Fizzy. PS: Jaffaman, that's a good photo. They both look very relaxed while they're having a good old chin wag. ----- "And the droning engine throbs in time with your beating heart..." |

Ha ha! We used to play that game when we were young, KTT. I have always liked VW Beatles (owned 2). Judging from the tail lights, it is at least a '74.
Are my hopes of a commercial/fan club release of Enzology dead? Has anyone submitted the idea to the new owners of the catalog, Warner Music Group? If not, please submit a proposal. Back to you in the studio, Jaffaman. http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/ ______________________________ I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real. You want to make a Yaz record. I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables. I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars. |

Doesn't look like it's going to happen. Warner Music was approached (as was FMR before that) but there's been no interest.

Just finished listening to this fab episode of Enzology, and it RULED. Thank you, Radio New Zealand for allowing this to happen.
I loved Tim's 'Shakespeare' intros, they reminded me of one of the characters from 'Little Britain' (dunno which one, but it just does) Also intersting to hear rough mixes/live/demo versions of songs, as well as how the members of the band felt. Really looking forward to Episodes IV & V. "Have mercy, been waiting for the bus all day..." |

As you can see by my last post on this topic, only a year ago I'd pretty much given up hope of Enzology being released.
Enzology Episode 2 - Mental Notes is now ready for downloading or streaming. And thanks for the enthusiastic feedback, Speesh |

I loved this episode too! It was so fantastic to be able to hear all the alt mixes of the band whilst recording the album, as well as live stuff, interviews, and of course Tiny Tote!
Hearing this makes me wish I'd been able to see the band live back then. |
