The only video I've ever seen of Split Enz on American tv would be their performance on the Fridays program. It's on youtube.I know they were on Solid Gold,The Tomorrow Show(I saw this when it aired)and a cable tv show on Nickelodeon called Livewire.
On Livewire they mimed to Hard Act to Follow followed by questions from the audience members(such as "Who's your taylor?") Anyone ever see this?I saw it when it originally but not since. Is it floating around somewhere? Are there any other US tv appearences I'm missing? |

They appeared on Livewire in 1980 and performed "I Got You" and "I Hope I Never" with an interview and the audience asking questions in between. They also appeared on American Bandstand on 6/13/81 lip synching "One Step Ahead" and "Hard Act To Follow".
Hope this helps !! |

Well, what do you know.I guess my memory does not serve me well after all.I must have caught the American Bandstand broadcast as well since I distinctly remember seeing Hard Act To Follow on tv.I even rembember discussing this with a friend at the time(1981).This was long before I bought Corraboree/Waiata.The song really struck my 12 yr old mind at the time.So apparently I have the two different shows/performances mixed up.Good thing I caught both.So I guess the only one I certainly did not see was the Solid Gold performance.
Just a side not:Considering the tv programs they were on in America at the time I'd say the Enz had some damn good exposure.Just adds to the mystery of them never quite breaking in the US. |

I have three appearances for them on Solid Gold :
"I Got You" 11/8/80 "I Hope I Never" 12/13/80 and "Hard Act To Follow", 6/6/81. If anyone knows of additional songs, please share. Hopefully, one day we'll have a videography right on this very website. |

Neil sounds so scared!
"A 90/10 split! Not even Crowded House get a 90/10 split!" |

Aw. That was silly and adorable. Do you think they ever look back on these performances and cringe, just a little bit?

well, Neil has often cringed in public at the thought of the I Got You video and I think Jools Holland ambushed him once with an old SE performance clip when he was in the tv studio with CH and he was totally cringing.
i would totally cringe too if someone showed me video of myself from 30 years ago..can't blame him even if we think the old stuff is great. opportunity only knocks once, but temptation leans on the doorbell |

Lucky for him all he has to do is look directly to his left to get the strength he needs to get it right and go foward :-)

Yes, I remember this! talltrees, you must be the official statistician of Enz fans -- you even have the air dates! But what a treasure trove. I had no idea that they were also on Fridays, Solid Gold, and the Tomorrow Show. Now here's where my memory might be going on me. When they were on American Bandstand performing "One Step Ahead," they were dressed pretty normally with normal hairstyles (not those "side wings") -- no makeup or costumes. Dick Clark asked them about this and Neil said they didn't want to be known as the band with the weird hairstyles; they wanted to focus more on the music. I hope that's accurate so far. But I thought for sure that they were on American Bandstand one other time before that (in 1980 or so, probably performing "I Got You"), and they were pretty "out there" in appearance (hence my memory of a ton of hairspray to make their hair look like it had a pair of wings). In the "I Got You" video, they don't look too outré, so maybe they had passed that stage already. Is my imagination playing tricks on me, or was there really another appearance on Bandstand? Does anyone remember? |
