Aha, so Letters to My Frenz's claim that this was the Luton version was incorrect? One of life's little mysteries solved. Smiler

I just made a connection on this song the other day - it's the Ninees demo from Nilfun that's listed as "Always Leaving"! D'oh!

I was listening to the Ninees track on headphones the other day and finally made out some of what was being sung in the chorus. While one of the words might be 'leaving', at other times it's definitely 'Evelyn' on the demo. A quick check of this episode and the official track listing (thanks Jaffa) and indeed, they are the same song.

So, was 'Always Leaving' the working title, or did Neil just dig up the tape and not remember what it was actually called?

The Ninees demo preceeded the Luton one and had the different lyrics and title.

Are non New Zealanders ever going to be able to hear Enzology? I know there are copyright issues but what if it was only released through the fan-club?

that is a pretty drunk sounding audience yelling out some pretty disturbing stuff in the background of the Next Exit rehersal....

the "Letters to My Frenz" documentary broadcast on BFM some years ago (1993?) included what the narrator boasted was "the extremely rare Luton version" of "Abu Dhabi" - and it had vocals. Eddie's comments were "we had a great demo of Abu Dhabi from Luton, but it's a shame about the Frenzy version". He (Eddie) went on to say that the song "had words originally, but I think they were held up as being 'racist' by someone and so Tim stopped singing them."

Well, whoever that person was, if I ever knew him or her, I would be VERY ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As an international member (UK) I can tell you that I've been able to download the podcasts Big Grin

I've never really known much about the history of the Enz so this is an education for me and now I'm thinking they should have been much bigger in the UK.!!!

Excellent Neilsknees. Smiler
I thought the word was the RNZ links wouldn't work internationally.

Agreed 'Without A Doubt' what could have been for Split Enz internationally during that time.

These podcasts are available free internationally. Three years ago streamed audio of the series (audio on demand) was available to some NZ isps only for a limited time. Enzology first began airing in New Zealand on National Radio on New Year's Day 2005. Since then it's been broadcast on Concert FM and Radio National in Australia with repeat broadcasts on Radio New Zealand National which were streamed live and accessible globally.

This is the first time that people have been able to legally download the series - and with much better sound quality.

Enzology began production in 1997 with tape sourcing and auditioning. Interviews were mainly conducted in 2003. The programmes were compiled in 2004.

Best episode to date, thank you SO MUCH! Triple kudos to the full-length True Colours (Let's Rock) at the end.

A massive thanks to all concerned for making this fascinating set of interviews available for everyone to hear. I am delighted to be able to listen to them, having been so jealous of NZ fans when they were originally broadcasted.
Listening to the last two shows has left me feeling frustrated that the band didn't make more headway in the UK when they were based over there. I'm convinced that with the right management and some wiser decision-making, they would have made the breakthrough.
There were enough memorable songs (in spite of production concerns) - I See Red, My Mistake, Bold As Brass etc - to have picked up airplay.

Is there a complete recording of Up Against A Brick Wall? Why didn't they ever release it (or is it a B-side somewhere). I finally was able to listen to episode V on the way to my parent's place (about an hour away, perfect time frame) and when I heard the song I was bouncing along to the beat (I'm sure other drivers thought I was bonkers!). Anyway, I would sure like to hear the complete song. Another rarity that needs some TLC!!

As far as I know it was never professionally recorded. The version in Enzology is a rehearsal/demo recorded roughly to cassette. It's the best tape of that song that exists, I think, although it's shortened slightly in Enzology.
