The "Spellbound" clip was taped in July 1975, I think, during their tour of NZ. It's been broadcast on TVNZ occasionally since then and features briefly in the "Spellbound" documentary. Sadly, the full thing wasn't included in the Clipz section of the Split Enz DVD. This video still exists thanks to an Enz fan who worked at TVNZ and had made a copy. The original master was junked.
The Radio With Pictures interview special you mention is in fan circulation, as is the "Enz With a Bang" special which was repeated on TVNZ just a few years ago and appears in excerpt form on the DVD. Different excerpts from Richard Finn's "New Faces" 8mm film appear in the "Spellbound" and "Give it a Whirl" documentaries. In both cases the film runs at the wrong speed. A few years ago I spent some time restoring the original film speed and shot sequence and managed to re-sync it with the audio of "129" and "Sweet Talking Spoon Song". Worked a treat. If it wasn't for copyright, I'd stick it on YouTube! |

Hmm...now that the Enz are "with" a major record company, and hence a much larger budget, I wonder if there's any chance of this kind of stuff making it to DVD.

Interesting stuff Jaffaman, Thank You for your reply. Yes i did note some excerts on the excellent TV3 doco 'Spellbound' that is one of my favs, right down to the Sam Neil narration, a real Kiwi who's who. Gonna check out Central library cause i see some of the stuff at the film archive is available at some libraries. 'Give It A Whirl' doco was good, wish i had picked up a pre-recorded dvd set of the series, when they 'dumped' the price. Yes that RWP interview still sticks in my mind as a good one, and Karyn had had a few aperitifs by the look, holding an unlit cigarette for part of the interview. And Neil using that line 'There was a sense of ..... in the air'. W.E. Care. |

I don't think the link above works for those outside NZ. The clip features Mike Chunn and the 1983 line-up of the Enz in separate interviews talking through the history of the Enz with interviewer Ian Fraser. Also included is film of the Enz in London 1976 - playing tennis and rehearsing - and a photo call of the reunited early Enz (some of 'em anyway) at His Majesty's Theatre, days before their Sweetwaters Festival show. There's no footage of this line-up playing.
I'm not sure if it was aired at the same time or some months later but another half hour of this feature was broadcast on Kaleidoscope, focussing on the individual Enz of early-mid 1983. We see them rehearsing "Our Day" and "Kia Kaha" (a swing version) and even hear Eddie sing "Goodnight Irene", accompanied by pianola. Tim mentions how he can still see Split Enz conquering America. He goes on to say that even if they split one day, they'll always be together. Even then he could envisage them coming together at age 50 "for a bit of a play". |
