I was given a very cool Christmas present - a turntable that converts my albums to iTunes format.

My husband has put together an awesome setup for me - the turntable, great speakers and a dedicated iTunes laptop.

So I can simply play my vinyls on the turntable if I'm feeling nostalgic, or I've also started converting some of them to iTunes and popping them on my iPod - having the 'vinyl' sound on my iPod is just amazing.

I'm having a lot of fun with this Chrissie pressie.

I have got a number of Enz LPs, one of which Seany was kind enought to get for me, which I play on my turntable rather than in cd form. Yes, they are a bit scratched some of them, but I still prefer them to cd.

But my particular favourite vinyl is David Bowie - China Girl. Great way to wake up on a Saturday and consider the weekend ahead, whilst bopping about to Let's Dance, with those deep bass notes. Big Grin

On an Enz-specific note, they did do one of those neat things with the 'infinite groove' at the end of Mental Notes (a la Sgt Peppers), where Phil would continue to drone on, "Make a mental note"... ad infinitum until you lifted the needle

Anyone know if that carried on through all the pressings, or just the early ones? I had an 80s pressing myself, but never had the right sort of turntable to check it out...

Just bought the True Colours laser etched vinyl today! Big Grin
I am a total vinyl whore.
By the way, for my 13th birthday in 1982 I got the 45 of "Six Month in a Leaky Boat". I still have it, of course.

I hate that moment when the guys take off their guitars and Matt throws the sticks into the crowd and there is no more...for tonight anyway.

Vinyl is definn-itely the most 'romantic' of the formats but it depends on the turntable and pick up how good records will sound.

Fortunately there's a special turntable that can be connected direct tot the computer so I have transferred some old vinyl to CD with very very good results so you can have the best of both worlds.

We just got a record player that can connect to our computer. Haven't had a chance to try that out yet, but I'm eager to give it a go. My Mothers' Day gift was 3 Split Enz records! Smiler

I've no idea when my copy was pressed but mine does that as well!

The LP of, say, "Time On Earth" blows the CD away. The CD is compressed and clipped.

Every CD in the Enz To Enz box is similarly compressed and clipped. It lost the Loudness War. I love Eddie Raynor and all. Certainly he knows the music as well as anyone, but he turned it up to 11 when 8 was just fine.

Here is a screenshot of the remaster (on top) vs the same song from the "80's Box":

Some music was lost in the remastering, without a doubt.

I hate over compression as much as the next guy but Time & Tide sounded like crap on the 80's box set. I'll take the remastered any day just to get a good solid sounding recording.

It sucks that we can't have both a great master recording AND a non over compressed CD.

My turntable is broken right now. But I grew up on the American vinyl, and I still prefer it greatly. After a decade of knowing only the A&M Frenzy, to say that the first CD version of it was disappointing is a massive understatement. Same for Corroboree and Time and Tide, which sounded sterile and muted in their first CD versions.

I have started a petition for the Finn Brothers albums and TWT and One Nil (All) to be released on vinyl format.

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/hifinn/petition.html

I am particularly keen to see the level of interest in this as I am also in a position to be able to invest in this as an independent project (a la Simply Vinyl etc.) if anyone has the appropriate industry connections and would be interested in partnering.

I cherish my pristine Japanese copy of Time and Tide on vinyl. It's like listening to a good Napa valley cabernet.

beaglehowl, that's the most intelligent and poetic thing I've seen on here in ages! Spent some of last Saturday evening listening to some vinyl on a system owned and in part built (well ... repaired) by someone who really knows what they're doing. All that was missing was the cab sav. I believe there's a rather fine one in the cellar under the stairs ... hopefully awaiting my return with the audiophile version of True Colours!

thankyou porter I have done my bit too.

Gryphon also comments in another thread about his wish to see "Finn" on 2 x 10" LPs..now that would be terrific especially with that artwork.

I don't own any Enz on vinyl but the one thing I know to be missing on the cds is the constanly repeating last words of Mental Notes and Ninnie Knees Up.

I've never heard the Enz on vinyl beyond the few 7" singles I've managed to pick up at fairs.

I'd love to be able to get my hands on some minty vinyl or high quality needledrops...

I expect they'd sound lovely.
