Can anyone who has this Kufala CD please help?
During WWY, between roughly 4:00 and Neil sings what appears to be another song, rather than an improv. The band follows his changes instinctively, as if this is well-known. Neil sings in quite a high register. It is all very reminiscent of James Blunt - the lyrical references to "no faith, no place" may be reminding me of the latter's No Bravery but it isn't that. Anyone know whether this is a brilliantly executed improv or a snippet of another song? And if so, which? ------------- "I think, ultimately, what Crowded House brings to a Neil Finn song is a sense of effortlessness." V. Wiseman, 2008 |

Apologies: hit the Quote icon rather than the Edit one.
Must be a record: two replies to my own post! ------------- "I think, ultimately, what Crowded House brings to a Neil Finn song is a sense of effortlessness." V. Wiseman, 2008 |

The Climber |
I think they did the same 'improv' at the Orpheum. I have a poor quality video snippet of it and it is in the higher register of Neil's voice. The band does follow along as if in tune with the whim. It is beautiful. I have no idea where it is snipped from but could flesh out nicely. Neil?

"how can you make me try..
how can we live to fly? one day...on our own....." or some such. yea--nothing i've ever heard before, but very interesting..words seem quite developed too. listening to a bunch of last year's shows...i've heard bits of "isolation" and "beautiful life" inserted into the middle of likely songs. this is quite a good show, Paul..i hadn't gotten to it yet..but have now. |

It's by far the best of the shows I've auditioned so far (done the first six, Montreal and San Diego). There are, as we'd expect, some fantastic moments on each but Denver is consistently brilliant. I've been making my own notes for future reference as I've been playing them. I might post them for those of us who still haven't picked these discs up. Regarding the improv - it really doesn't sound like one. It just seems so well formed. Maybe the chords are just plain obvious for anyone following, but the band do seem to know where Neil's going before he gets there... Also it sounds so frustratingly familiar but I just can't place it. ------------- "I think, ultimately, what Crowded House brings to a Neil Finn song is a sense of effortlessness." V. Wiseman, 2008 |

Something So Strong |
Haven't heard the Denver one, but all the WWY improvs that I can think of sound like a development of the 8 years (or more) old one, which had the lyrics
And this day may never come around Better let the sun shine out They all have a similar melody but different lyrics - the Chicago HOB webcast and the the Orpheum one that Dafinnative Girl mentions, for example. I can imagine the words Martine posted being sung to that same tune - or I could be totally wrong |

Hi Paul,
Be interested to learn whether it is the same as at Chicago night 1. Can still pick it up from :- http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-gb&tab=s75&vid=815a19d9-ed...64-bab5-f73c9aa6a683 Like your 'neck of the woods' by the way - stayed overnight at Laxton on the way up to Northumberland last week. Had a "Don't stop Now" moment as the satnav somehow directed us past Edwinstowe back to the A1! |

I agree. It's my favourite as well. And Neil did the same with WWY at Werchter, though slightly shorter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq-TnB_iyEE |

Interesting. That's an update of what they did at the House of Blues night one last August (the webcast show), and more or less what they played this May in Chicago (second night). Still intrigued by this one. -- And I wake up blind Like my dreams were too bright |

You stayed overnight in Laxton? Excellent. There's an excellent pub in Laxton - hope you had a chance to check it out. Did you spot the open fields? One of only two villages in the country to retain the open field farming system. Sorry, being a geography geek again. Interested to know how on earth the satnav thought you'd need to go through Edwinstowe to get onto the A1 from Laxton! Still, you got a chance to see some trees! ------------- "I think, ultimately, what Crowded House brings to a Neil Finn song is a sense of effortlessness." V. Wiseman, 2008 |

Me too. I'm gonna do some further digging (and play some more Kufalas). As I've noted above, this just doesn't sound like one of Neil's improvs. ------------- "I think, ultimately, what Crowded House brings to a Neil Finn song is a sense of effortlessness." V. Wiseman, 2008 |

Paul,
If you're referring to the Dovecote Inn, then yep, we had our meal there. Excellent food/beers. Back on topic - has the segment we're all referring to ever been played as anything other than a digression from within WWY? The chord sequence used would make it strong enough to stand as a song in its own right but there's little evidence so far that it may feature on the new CD... |

Together Alone |
The same melody with different lyrics was played at the Oakland Paramount Theater show.
Earlier when the crowd began to sing, Neil stated, "I knew you would do it if we left you on your own." Then at the 4:15 mark, Neil sings the following lyrics to melody similar to the other shows: "So long, we left them on their own before. They never got into trouble - what's wrong with this one. Have faith; you've left them on their own - nothing happened. No one came along and stole them away. They are safe, and the train goes back at 4 in the morning. I wait to the roar of the lights once more gone right." My wife and I noticed this at the show seeing that we left are two young ones at home. |

This has to be my all time favourite improv thingie Neil does in relation to WWY..and he still does it from time to time. it might be a rainy day project to find as many as these as possible and compile them onto one cd............or not! lolol |
