Of all the seated concerts at Brisbane Entertainment Centre that I have ever been to the one where I saw the most people get up and dance in the aisles was CH on Nov 11 2007. So, this flies in the face of Dazz's assertion that they are not a "get up and party" band.
This happened totally at Neil's encouragement.
He pretty much said, "Screw the security people, just get up and dance". So we did. Big Grin

I hate that moment when the guys take off their guitars and Matt throws the sticks into the crowd and there is no more...for tonight anyway.

....and to follow on from that Beajai, at the Brighton concert just under four weeks later, the crowd rose as one, during the 7th song of the set, "Whispers & Moans", of all songs and remained standing for the rest of the gig.

Not sure if it's been said her already but at the start of the Living Enz cd Neil says something along the lines of "everybody stand up, it makes it easier".

Not sure if his views have changed now but I really can't see how a performer would want to play to a seated audience, it's more enjoyable for everyone if it's standing.

Really hope there will be standing venues on the next CH tour, not sure if there will be though Frowner

Standing seems the best way to go.

Went to a Neil young concert in Zurich last year, got a front row seat at a high price, and bugger me as soon as the music started the back rows, (which were considerably cheaper) ran forward to the stage blocking our view. The people working there couldn't do a thing about it as there were too many so we just had to go forward into the crowd to enjoy the show. Was a little p****d off about that....

There are quite a few bands coming over thhis year but I won't be buying those expensive seats again, once bitten, as they say.

In concerts they should give vertically challengend people boxes to stand on, measured as you go in!!!

Without question, this is THE most annoying thing for me about seated shows. If you've bought a ticket for a seat, fine, stand up, but stay in your assigned area!

I've given up seeing the Finns in shows with assigned seating, for exactly this reason.

I haven't seen Neil Young in years...since Sonic Youth opened for him, whenever that was (50 years ago? Wink ), but I don't seem to encounter this problem with anyone other than the Finns. I can't compete with the thundering herd running towards the front (and don't want to be trampled trying, as I'm small, and not exactly young), so I've given up. My concert dollars are spent elsewhere, either at standing-only shows, or at seated shows for acts where the audience is more respectful about what exactly it is they've paid for.

BUMP

With tour dates for the UK announced in the next couple of days and smaller venues announced, what do we think this means for standing vs seating?

I'm worried that it means seated! Frowner The consensus here was for standing, I really hope some of the powers that be have taken that on board. Seating takes so much away from gigs for me, and we all know Neil likes us standing up, he say's it enough Smiler

Yeah, I really wonder if there are only seated venues of that size in the UK. Can someone prove me wrong? Or we can just wait until tomorrow and find out Smiler

Oh, and can they please bring Augie March for support? A girl can dream, right?

Oh yes, I'd still much rather have a stand personally Smiler

Reckon its going to be theatres so.....all seats but, if Frenz get the pick of the seats via the pre sale, it won't matter - we'll be 'up' from early into the set!

Standing kills my back, but it's the only way to see a show. Actually, seated isn't always bad if you can afford to sit close and people stay in their area. Most of my best concert experiences have been standing, though.

I'm not familiar enough with venues outside London to comment (though I'd bet there are some that fit), but here are a few well-known medium-sized London venues that *can* have at least a section for standing, according to configuration:

Brixton Academy, Hammersmith Apollo, Shepherd's Bush Empire (smaller, saw Neil play there, I'd like this to be one of the CH venues), Camden Roundhouse (never been there but it looks interesting).

Probably many more than that, but they certainly exist. I hope that at least some of the UK gigs have standing, and hope you make it to one of them AndiB Smiler

I like to have both. I love to stand at a gig in order to get up close, however I am just as happy to stand up in front of a seat, with the option of being able to rest my sore back and knees for a while. Standing for hours on end means excruciating pain for me Frowner

Watney's Sideburns are in better shape than Watney's Knees and Watney's Back. So I'll opt for lying-down-only concerts if any are available. Otherwise I'll take whatever is going.

Poor you, Watney. How's Watney's Wallet going to stand up to all this gigging?

Here's what I remember from the House of Blues show in August '07 (besides the amazing CH performance): standing on line, standing for two hours before the show began, standing through two opening acts, standing for the two-hour show, being repeatedly pushed by people who wanted to get in front of me (I was about four deep away from the stage), being repeatedly pummeled by drunken people behind me, being in serious pain at the end of the show.

And here's what I remember from the Vic show in May '08 (besides the amazing CH performance): being able to get to the theater when I wanted (in other words, not 2.5 hours early), being able to use the restroom without fear of losing my place, being able to enjoy the music without being assaulted by the people around me, not being in agony at the end of the evening.

Since August '07 some things have happened that make me doubt my ability to stand through a show again. I'll take seats, please.

Edit: and yes, I know this means I'm getting old.
