Getting Somewhere

For those not familiar, the film "Pirate Radio" is set in 1966, when the BBC did not play rock music and "pirate radio" broadcasts originated from boats anchored off the coast of Britain.

Not much of a movie (IMHO) -- it could have been much, much better.

However.....toward the climax the Philip Seymour Hoffman character leans into the microphone as all is collapsing around him and, rallying his listeners, says very distinctly: "Don't dream it's over."

Saw a preview for this about a month ago when I went to see Invention of Lying.

It looked really good and being aware of the Radio Caroline history, etc, wondered if the movie was based on anything resembling fact.

I've since gathered, that it might be best to grab the book written by the guy who actually founded Radio Caroline (it was in last weekend's paper and I've forgotten his name and the name of his book) (drat it all Wink )

However, it might totally be worth it to rent this when it's available .... just to hear that one line. Thanks for the heads up !

When I saw the line delivered, my reaction was that the screenwriter (who is also the director, Richard Curtis) must be a fan. (In fact, I thought that in part because CH was not around in '66 -- but he worked it in anyway.)

I don't know if this is the same movie called "The Boat that Rocked," but that title certainly fits.

The fellow who plays the manager in Flight of the Conchords is also in the movie. As is January Jones of the great US TV series Mad Men.

Definitely 'The Boat that Rocked' in UK. Yes indeed, a good spot. The soundtrack CD is great for all you sixties fans out there...
