Twice if Your Lucky.
Having read the Neil interview yesterday we gotta assume its closer to the original version than the Lucky Lolla version - but I hope they found room for the 'said so' line which I really like. |

I think this one (Twice if your lucky) will be a fairly big hit. It seems like the Better be Home song of the CD.

This drip by drip, tweet by tweet announcement of the songs is making me lose sleep, I tell you! But it's having at least one salutary effect: it's making me think about the sequencing of tracks, and how crucial this is to the quality of an album. Of the 8 songs announced so far, I have heard at least 6 of them live or on youtube. I have my thoughts about them as individual songs: some I like, some I like less, and some I love. But the sequence in which they have been announced is making me think about them quite differently.
I know that this may not be the final playing order. But after the mysterious Archer's Arrows and Saturday Sun, here's the sequence: Amsterdam Either Side of the World Falling Dove Isolation The Intriguer Twice If You're Lucky I'll be honest: I'd never cared much for Falling Dove. To my ears, it sounded too twee, too Nick Drake-y (though without his incomprehensible West Country burr). Tucked in between the roaring Pacific surf of Either Side of the World's exuberant outro and the blue Antarctic ice of Isolation's opening, Falling Dove suddenly seems just right -- a temperate acoustic breeze between the hot and the cold of the electric guitar/lapsteel combo, a moment of calm tucked away amidst roiling forces of nature. I could go on -- Amsterdam seems more palatable followed by Either Side of the World (which evokes literally the other side of the world from Amsterdam; from Zeeland to New Zealand!). And I love the juxtaposition of Isolation and The Intriguer, a cocktail of eeriness followed by the chaser of joy that is Twice If You're Lucky. This is shaping up to be a cracker of a record. |

As the same with Suffer Never, this is the first Crowded House album to be released since I've become a huuuuuge fan (I'm 17), so all this hype is kind of new to me. I think it was a great idea to play the songs on the tour, not only to give the fans an idea of what to expect, but to give the band an opportunity to let the songs transform....
And it's an even better idea to release the songs title by title on twitter! makes for some verrryyy interesting conversation on the forums, and Watney, you make some very good points about the order of tracks on the album, particularly with the idea of Falling Dove breaking it up a bit... ____________________________________________________ still so young to travel so far, old enough to know who you are |

OK, have I or have I not heard Elephants? I feel like I have and that I liked it, though I have no recollection of what the song sounds like. I don't see it on ITunes. Maybe since I've heard of it, I feel like I must have heard it. I really don't know!!
Keep in mind that once upon a time I posted that I had never heard Spirit of the Stairs, and then later found a feedback posted by myself after having heard the song something like a year earlier. My point is that my memory isn't particularly reliable Anyway, my crystal ball seems to be telling me that Elephants will be track #11. ************************************************************ It's a course in philosophy, yeah What is life? Neil premiered 'Elephants' at Largo last year. Even Nick was surprised that we had been privy to it. So doubtful it's been heard. Unless you have a very sneaky friend who just happened to sureptitiously record that GORGEOUS performance,

I meant to say on my previous post that I don't see it on Youtube!! I was editing my itunes library at the time, so I had itunes on the brain. Maybe I've just heard certain people ooooh and ahhhhh over it so much, that I'm already biased in favour without having heard it

Watney, I'd previously forsworn re-listens to the less-familiar tracks until the album's release, but your beautiful description of the way you hear the potential flow going makes me want to chuck that prim abstemiousness and dive right back in again! To try to hear it the way you can.
Beautifully well-described. -- > ~ Mr. Sadly knows some of our members feel rescued by the Intriguer... |

Well assuming Elephants is on the album, and there being only 3 spots left to fill, I'd guess the last songs to be:
Turn it Around A Beautiful Life Elephants There is a version of A Beautiful Life on youtube somewhere and I think it's a fantastic song. What I'm bummed about is what happened to The Only Way to Go is Forward? Was that song cut a while back? I was looking forward to it on the album! EDIT: unless of course The Only Way to Go has been renamed to Saturday Sun or Archer's Arrows of course! |

I've never heard any of these new songs live, but I have seen some 'works in progress' on Youtube. Frankly, I'm not impressed...
If I compare Time on Earth to the four previous albums, I'm not impressed either. Is it the fact that these songs are relatively new to me, while my ears are used to the older albums? Or is it in the music itself, it seems to me that all these new songs are nothing but shadows of the older ones. Same kind of song, but none of them is really catchy. |

Yeah, I personally don't know what all the fuss is about some of the songs, at least the ones that (attempt to?) sound like older Crowded House songs. To me they just don't have the spark. It's the more left-field songs and 'Amsterdam' that I'm looking forward to but it appears that a couple have not made the cut. Hopefully the three mystery songs are a bit less conventional. _______________________ Bar the whoo-bar! |

I know it's a little bit premature to be discussing but I'm really surprised Watney and a few others aren't keen on Falling Dove. I think it's a work of genius. It might be because I'm a big Beatles fan but to me it's Neil's "Blackbird". It's already one of my favorites from what I've heard so far. Macca also did a little homage to himself and Blackbird with "Jenny Wren" which is also a great song.

Only 2 spaces left now, I'm starting to get a bit worried about Turn It Round, it has to be on there!
