After the emotional highs of seeing them last summer I must admit, somewhat sheepishly, that I haven't been listening to much Crowded House as of late. This morning while loading up some songs to listen to while at work I decided to include some...

I had forgotten what a wonderful song NEVER BE THE SAME is and was taken back to the summer day when I first heard it. Smart lyrics, great bass work and drumming, etc. This was always my favorite song from TOLM but I barely recall many others that claim to have loved it as I did (and still do.)

My utter ignorance leads me to believe that Neil doesn't even care for it as I didn't see it on playlists when they toured last summer.

What, in your opinion, is their most underrated song?

'Never be the same' was played at the Orpheum gig this year after a request. Although Neil did struggle with the lyrics of the second verse had had to ask for help lol.

One song that comes to mind is She Goes On. It has such a soothing melody that it calms me down when I need to be. I don't know if CH plays this a lot at their concerts or not, but a song that I don't see mentioned very much.

And I thought of another song, Nails in My Feet-the lyrics has such a visual presence that I can see the song.

And these days I'm rediscovering Black and White Boy. When I first heard it, when it came out, I didn't like it. But now it's got a beat that's very catching to me.

I would have to agree with She Goes On. I love that song.
The most underrated to me is How Will You Go. I love the opening line..."Escape is on your mind again.." I suppose I can relate well to that line as I am often feeling restless.

My vote would go to most of the songs on Afterglow, in particular Left Hand, Help Is Coming and You Can Touch. If I had to pick one (and jeebus that's difficult with CH songs!)I guess right now I'd go with Help Is Coming. Man, would I love to hear that live. The "escape...." part gives me chills listening to the CD, I can't imagine how gorgeous that would be in person.

These music analysis threads are interesting. It's made me aware that I tend to gravitate toward CH's less popular tunes. I know it's near sacrilege to say so, but the recorded version of Distant Sun has never done it for me, except that great build at the end of the song.

Most under-rated? Anything off TOLM or TA they don't play live...

That is, Never Be The Same, Love This Life, In The Lowlands, I Feel Possessed, Kare Kare, In My Command, Nails, Catherine Wheels, Together Alone...

Oh, and, possibly top of my list, I Am In Love.

I agree. Kare Kare and Walking on the Spot are probably my favorite "under dog" CH songs.

I always thought 'Fame Is' was slagged off way too many times as a 'Another Nail For My Heart' rip off.

The bridge and the mini guitar solo are quite enchanting.

My vote goes to "Dr. Livingston". A cool, slinky groove, intriguing lyrics, and a great Neil vocal. Nice production by Herr Froom, too. This, to me, is one of the rarities that sounds like a finished record - unlike "Lester" or "I Love You Dawn" or something like that. I can think of at least four songs from Woodface that this could have replaced quite handily...

That's probably my fave CH song, I agree it's really visual, but it's that third chorus that gets me. It's like a kick in the gut; I'm so down I missed it at 9:30 club.

I adore this song. I was really hoping to hear this live too.

Good one-Fame Is. That IS underrated and I for one think that it's not much like that Squeeze tune, it shares similar chord progression but so do many, many tunes.

I've just been back onto the first album this week - how about 'Tombstone'

SPIRIT OF THE STAIRS

Still not an official song (only a demo on the FTTW-DVD credits). But this IS a great song and one of the best compositions Neil had ever done.

THIS song should be on the next CH Album, it would be a really great tune.

Listened yesterday to it on the FTTW-DVD and what I must say on this point: Peter Jones made a really good job on drums. Too bad that he hadn't a future on CH... IMHO

Finngirl-that's a great idea. Do the band look at these pages?? I wonder if a petition is in order for a special fan club show...it's a dream but a great one

I'd also lobby for "Kill Eye", one that seems loathed by a good chunk of Finndom - I think it's a great, beefy track, with another great Neil vocal (very cathartic, I suspect) and some cool keyboard stuff. Nice drumming by Paulo as well.

Thanks to the praise for Never Be The Same here, I played it through again a couple of times. It should carry a Government health warning for risk of serious addiction. I have had it in my head for days & can't stop playing it.
