For me it's Black and White Boy & I am in Love. Both TA session songs seemed to have disappeared into obscurity. I'm aware that BAWB has been performed a few times on the TOE tour, but nowhere near enough, well, not at the show I attended anyway Smiler

Imagine a whole album of nothing but underrated songs! Hey, they could do it! Maybe the next album!!

They can do it. They have it in them, I believe.

In fact...I bet they will. Don't count them out yet. Their days of underrated songcraft have only just kicked into HIGH GEAR.

I just love Black and White Boy and Catherine wheels but I've never heard them play these live at the shows I've been to. Darn.

i'd love to hear Catherine Wheels, but, i've heard that they've cut off instrumental jam type thing after Neil sings "she's gone, vanished in the night, broke off the logic of life...". Such a shame Frowner

I agree... Loved In My Command this summer at Thetford Forest, had always hoped to hear it live. Also brilliant that it followed the perhaps underrated World Where You Live.

Love "In My Command" also. I always thought "Hole In The Ice" was a companion piece: both are boisterous, sprawling rock songs, with breath-takingly beautiful chorus sections.

spot on about in my command and hole in the ice.
the minimalistic melody in the verse sang rauciously, followed by the gorgeous harmonic chorus.strong parallells in structure and arrangement.

Personally, I'm just glad this topic hasn't devolved into a semantics argument about the meaning of "underrated" or "underappreciated"... Wink

I"m a bad forum member and haven't read all the thread before posting. But in answer to the original question, I'd have to nominate "Kill Eye" as most underrated and under-appreciated, particularly after the many nominations it's gotten in the worst of CH thread.

Kill Eye - and what's wrong with it?

Chocolate Cake - Geez, people. Can you take a joke? So it killed their career in the US supposedly. It didn't; the idiots at Capitol Records did. They couldn't promote the benefits of water to a house on fire.

Can't Carry On - Much better than the CH version of "I Walk Away"

Fame Is - a Squeeze knockoff? a) is this a bad thing since Squeeze are an excellent undervalued pop band themselves? and b) gimme a break

She Goes On - A genuine undiscovered gem. Proof that CH can do country-rock quite easily. (sorry for using the 'c' word)

As Sure As I Am - just for the changes in the verse alone. Sublime use of accordian too.

Instinct - Why on earth is this derided?

Love You Til The Day I Die - One of the rare instances where CH actually rocked

oh my gosh

Oh yeah.

My vote here goes to I Feel Posessed. It made it to Recurring Dream, but then seemed to sink back into obscurity. Haven't heard of it being played live at all recently. It's so haunting and humble, it's been amongst my favourtie songs for as long as I can remember.

Honorable mention to Lester, and Tombstone.

Not sure what "underrated" means....

Love This Life is genius, IMHO, but I think many people know this.

Never Be the Same has its fans too, and had place of honor (side 2, track 1) on TOLM.

She Goes On is extraordinary. Again, I think its partisans carry the flag.

So for the truly neglected, I have to go with Kare Kare -- which is atmospheric and great, and which, I think, is less top of mind for many.

Underrated how? Like it doesn't amuse you, like a clown? Let me understand this, 'cause I like...you know, maybe it's me, I'm a little ****ed up, maybe. But underrated how? Underrated as in no one cares about it? It doesn't get played live? You forget how good it is because you haven't listened to it in so long? What do you mean "underrated?" How? HOW THE **** IS IT UNDERRATED? Tell me! Tell me how it's underrated!

Ahhh, I almost had you, didn't I? I almost had you!

Time Immemorial comes to mind right away. Fingers of Love. Walking on the Spot. Lots of good stuff that sounds so good -- after you've forgotten just how good it sounded the first time around.

I think "Transit Lounge" is underrated. I think it and "Pour Le Monde" are as good as anything Neil's written before. Maybe "Transit Lounge" doesn't sound as good live but that doesn't diminish the greatness of the studio version one bit.

Oh wow. The first time I'd heard "Fame Is" I thought it sounded like something Squeeze would've done, but figured I was crazy. At least I know I'm not alone in thinking this. Smiler (I love both bands though, however I do like CH much, much more)

Anyway, to answer the original question, I suppose I'd have to also say "Never Be The Same." It's so wonderfully addictive.
