Speaking of Pour Le Monde, heard it in Homebase today lol(UK DIY store). Superb to hear it there-could well become a classic now Homebase are playing it. Probably get people muttering 'nice song-I wonder who does that one?'

Hmmm - it just struck me that many of the under rated songs here seem to be very similar to the 12 worst selection thread...

Yeah, I noticed that too. We're a fickle bunch, eh? For the record, though, no one seems to be championing "All I Ask" (rightfully so, in my opinion)

Oh, I love "All I Ask"! I have all these involved harmonies that I contribute to it right before the orchestral movement kicks in.

I'm not sure it fits into the album, but then Woodface is so WAW anyway.

Oh Mr. Sadly, you're quite the contrarian. Did you champion it over on the other thread where it was getting its ass whupped?

She Goes On.... a beautiful song that rarely seems to get played live.

I'd say Lost Island....very haunting sounding song filled with swaying emotions....should have been on TOE (of course I have to say....in place of She Called Up) and would have pushed that CD a few notches in a favourable direction.

I'd gone for Time Immemorial, but here's my current vote-As Sure As I Am. Beautiful chords and melody.

I love it as well. It's a beautiful sentiment and a beautiful song. I could just get lost in Tim singing "Oh, please let me stray" every time I hear it.

I must have missed it! I been working a lot lately, I mostly just have to skim here and there plus a quick search to see if anyone called my name...

Methinks Mr. Sadly just yearns to wax eloquent; the subject matter is of little concern. He could likely write a sonnet about napkins were he so inclined.

HAW! "ALL I ASK" OF LITTLE CONCERN???

I admit, the first time I heard it I was like "did Neil have a cold?" Later I realized what was up.

This I take as a compliment! Thank you! But you think too highly of me. I'm quite sure I couldn't write any such thing without boning up on the form. Is that the one with 14 lines mixed lambic hexameter and closing with a blank couplet?

It better not be. I feel like I just made up half those words.

"All I Ask" is, now that I think of it, very like a napkin. Flat, bland, imminently disposable.

Sorry, I just had to interrupt these misguided paeans to what may well be the worst CH track ever recorded.

In my opinion, that is. Far be it from me to impale someone else's taste.

Okay. This is my new take on "All I Ask." I got a $5 Sinatra CD over the weekend. It was from his 1940's Columbia period - early stuff. I figured, I was never into Sinatra but maybe if I heard the early stuff I'd "get" it.

I really only got it for that reason, I wanted to give ol' Blue Eyes an open mind for once. And then as I listened, I noticed that I was reminded of "All I Ask" several times. Stylistic touches and such. But I have to say, "All I Ask" is a far better song than 8 out of 10 of the songs on this compliation - and to my ears, a better song than the other 2 as well.

Maybe it's a matter of taste. I don't think most people care for songs done in that style anymore. "All I Ask" is, I think, Tim's nod to that kind of a song - the barely-brushed beat, the moody piano, the melancholy strings and a crooning voice. To most modern ears, that combination sucks! But I like it now - in fact, thanks to Tim, I've grown to be able to love it. Frank could never have gotten me there, but Tim may have gotten me at least half-way to Frank.

Not with this particular collection though. "Sunshine Cake"? "They've Got An Awful Lot of Coffee In Brazil"? "Nature Boy" is one gloriously creepy number, and I can't even put my finger on why - I'm not even sure it's the lyrics. It sounds like an evil Christmas carol about...I'm not sure, I'll have to listen again to figure that out. Even "Begin the Beguine" was a letdown! Why is this song famous - the time signature? Call me back when I'm supposed to care.

Frank was some singer, though - I'll tell you that. Whoo boy. I might even get one of his proper albums. Maybe I'll try one of the ones that whipped the pants off Help! or Revolver at the Grammys. Those albums are sure to be tops.

Five bucks? Well, Mr. Sadly, you get what you pay for. I'm surprised "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" isn't on there. Personally, I never understood all the hoopla about Frank - Mel Torme could sing rings around Ol' Gray Toup, if you ask me. But you're right about Tim tapping into that vibe on "All I Ask" - and yes, it's a better song than "How Much Is That Doggy In the Window". But Tim always get carried away with that stuff, in my opinion; he goes into character with a bit too much gusto. (Witness him on the Letterman show when CH did Chocolate Cake; Tim mugging and warbling and wriggling his hips in his best pseudo-Elvis style, with the shirt open and the medallion. Agonizing.)

Just wanted to chime in that I'm another who really likes All I Ask. It does have that classic ballad arrangement, but with Tim chord changes and an almost buddhistic subject matter. Not many pop songs I can croon along to in the car are about non-attachment.

Ol' Blue Eyes has never lit my fire (no, Jim Morrison didn't either, for that matter), but my mom sure got her fingers a-snappin' when he was singing. I think different generations hear the magic in their generation's signature music, while subsequent generations often lack the ability. The reverse is just as true, of course. My mom thought Nirvana and Public Enemy were just noise.
