I'll be seeing Brian too, on July 17. He's actually playing a free show here in NY. Eeker

I saw him about 10 years ago and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

Holy cow - 37 songs?!?!??!

Sounds fantastic. Smiler

Although I won't get my hopes up that I'll get 37 songs at a free show. He'll probably save that for his other NY show where (legitimate) ticket prices run from somewhere over $100 all the way up to $500. I am passing on that show. Wink

There is a God, and its not bloody Brian, Big Grin Mellencamp is touring Aust and NZ. Husband was under strict instructions to dump me off in surgery and get onto those pre-sale tickets. Woke up in recovery and uttered, did you get the tickets? and zonked out again for a few hours. All is good. Amen.

Bob Dylan at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, August 20th. I figure I should see this legend once in my lifetime.

As am I, as in seeing Neil & Tim next week and am very very excited about it Big Grin

Last week I saw 2 Jimmy Barnes shows in Melbourne and I have to say, he is just getting better and better with age. I've seen him many many times but I think these shows were the best I've even seen from him, his voice was amazing. The shows were at Crown, so a relatively small seated venue and the first 8 or so songs he did were from Out of the Blue and everyone was staying seated, most unlike a Barnesy gig! Then starts the intro to Driving Wheels which got everyone up on their feet as vintage Barnesy returned for the rest of the night. Mind you, the first song of the first encore was Blue Hotel, unlikely placement imo but thats ok cos its beautiful (I actually called out loud "YAY NEIL" as Jimmy mentioned that Neil had written the song for him and got a lovely smile back in return Smiler). He ended up doing around 28-30 songs, plus we got special guests of Diesel and Tex Perkins at the Sat night show which was fabulous! Anyway, he's doing some gigs in NSW over the next week or so and would recommend anyone up there to try to catch a show as you won't be disappointed. Thanks & love ya Jimmy Smiler

Southern California <-------new song from forthcoming solo album

I first saw Brian Wilson about 10 years ago. That was one of the best shows I've ever seen. It struck me at the time how he seemed so fragile. He came out and sat behind a keyboard that he never played. His voice was very rough, but got better as the night went on (with much encouragement and shouts of love from the audience), to the point where he was able to sing Caroline No with the voice of an angel. I cried.

So last night, 10 years on, and we have the same shell of a man, only worse. Again, he sat behind a keyboard that he never played, except at the end, when they handed him a guitar which he held in the position one would hold it to play it, but he never played it. He had his right hand on the strings and his left hand on the fingerboard, but I don't think he played one note.

His voice was very rough. There were some nasty cracks in places, and much off key singing.

In fact, what I saw last night, I would better describe as a Brian Wilson tribute band, with Brian sitting front and center, contributing what he could.

He had a huge band, just like last time (there were 12 of them + Brian), and his band was absolutely reverential. The music and harmonies were fantastic.

Brian sang lead on almost (!!) all of the songs, did a bit of harmony, but when the harmonies got very complex, I think he was just sitting there. He didn't even sing the lead vocal on Wouldn't It Be Nice - one of the guys in his band did. So, the Brian Wilson Tribute Band would have gone on fine without him - I think they were there in large part to catch him if/when he fell.

Now, if this was any other artist on the planet, I think I would call Brian's performance last evening unforgiveable. But I forgive Brian. It is a miracle he is here and of stable enough frame of mind to even trot himself out in front of an audience. AND THOSE SONGS!!!! I forgive him his disabilities. But he has the goods in those songs. Nearly 50 years worth of songs. He does seem like he's enjoying himself. It's just that he can't do it any more.

In spite of all this, I had the time of my life at this show...it was BRIAN WILSON for god's sake. How much longer is anyone going to be able to say they're going to see BRIAN WILSON??? Not much longer, I fear. I sang along to every song. Smiler I don't think I've sung this much at a concert since the Crowded House Artist's Den show last summer.

Interestingly, enough people who bought tickets to the other NY show (the one with ticket prices from $100-$500) were upset about what was pretty much the same show I saw for free last night at Coney Island, that Brian has offered anyone who attended that show A REFUND OUT OF HIS POCKET! Eeker

Ingrates. Really. That expensive show was for charity. What did people expect???

I think the song in question is called "Drive-In". Well, that is sad to hear that people demanded a refund. Ingrates indeed. Given that Brian is on the record as saying he hates touring, i got the impression when i saw him live that he isn't exactly in the zone at the moment. He seems to have 2 settings, & is either on or off. Despite that fact, when you hear that band, playing those songs, with Brian (& not his litageous cousin), it's pretty hard not to sing, dance & have a great time. Glad you enjoyed the show despite the lack of Brian zing. His new album is due out in early September (check local record bars for details!), & according to his website, he's back on his old label, Capitol Records. Only hope people don't buy it & then take it back to complain that it "ain't as good as Pet Sounds"... Big Grin

Well, i'm not going to see anyone play anything at the moment. Was thinking of catching Leonard Cohen live, but he's playing at the O2 Arena, & unless you're right up the front, the sound is crap. Still, he may never tour again, just like The Eagles & The Stones are always promising. Cest la vie.

To be fair, no one demanded refunds. They just complained. And then Brian (or, to be more accurate, his wife) offered people a refund if they wanted one.

I've been spending the entire summer seeing concerts. *laughs*

In the past 4 weeks, I've seen Ulrich Schnauss, Calexico, Joseph Arthur, and Brian Wilson.

Tomorrow I'm seeing Dean & Britta.

Yet to come on the calendar are Ben Lee, Silver Jews, Calexico (again), and the Notwist. (Although Calexico and the Notwist are actually in the fall.)

It's been a good summer, musically, so far. Smiler

Brownie after reading your "list" of concerts, i was shocked & ashamed at my own "concert participation apathy", so i've decided that i should really get out a bit more, & i've decided to go & see someone who probably isn't the future of rock, not cutting edge, or in the zeitgeist zone at the moment (good for me *pats self on back*). Yes, i'm going to see Leonard Cohen. The future of Rock & Roll is in safe hands here. Big Grin

Of your list of bands, i only really know Brian Wilson & Ben Lee. Although Calexico does sound vaguely familiar, unless i'm mistaking them for a well known petrolium company. Hope you enjoy Ben Lee, because that's the way he likes it.
