A link to a song on 'Youtube'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhb8r2i1ZL4

Firstly let me say that listening to other people cover classic Crowded House songs is not for everybody.
I fully appreciate that Crowded House fans!

Here is a link to the classic 'Locked out' that I have recorded on Youtube.

Having listened to Neil Finn explain years ago that he wrote this beautiful song originally to be played slowly but somewhere in the recording process they decided to play it quickly. This gave me the rather obvious idea of covering this song slowly.

A truely great song that was a pleasure to record.

Feedback welcome.

Yes, some of those You-Tube comments were pretty positive! I think the slower tempo definitely brings something out in the song.

Neil has a thing about thinking his uptempo songs sound better slow. I, on the other hand, do an INSANE blistering rockstravaganza version of "Fingers of Love."

Nah, I don't. I'm just kidding. Anyway, hearing "Locked Out" at this tempo makes me think Bruce Hornsby could have a huge hit with it if he was so inclined.

EDIT: Um, just to clarify...there may be a lot of people out there who would be knee-jerk inclined to take any Hornsby reference as a slight. If you're one of those people, well, I'm certainly not going to say I apologize because...shoot, it's no slight. Hornsby was at one point DA BOMB. He's a talented pianist. As a vocalist, he was at least able to make his limitations work in the service of the material. Something one might have a hard time saying about Sir Bob Dylan for instance! I won't hear these baseless Bruce Hornsby slams.

EDIT2: Nor has anyone made any, but, you know. Preemptive strike. I can be a little defensive about Bruce Hornsby when the mood takes me.

EDIT3: I don't think they knighted Bob. He being a yank and all, I don't think the jurisdiction is there for them to do that. Anyway, I was speaking figuratively.

EDIT4: I hope that clears up any potential misunderstandings.

Thank you very much. It means a lot to hear a Crowded House fan give us such positive feedback.

Hi there spankie, & welcome! Smiler

Sometimes things move a little slow on the frenz forum, & it can take a while for folks to catch up on things that aren't mainstream Enz/Crowdies/Finns/Judd/Liam & Beard etc. Rest assured, when they do, i'm sure they will be mightily impressed. Cool

I really enjoyed your slow mix version of "Locked Out". I love your band's name Strollo's Cafe. I am guessing you are a duo? Some mighty fine multi-instrumentalist work there. What is that guitar that you play the middle-eight solo on?

Great stuff!! More please. Razzer

Can we get a slow mix version of Kare Kare by any chance??

Hey Seany

Thank you for your great comments.

The guitar the solo was recorded on was actually a full sized Taylor acoustic. However when we came to shoot the video, my brother didn't have his Taylor with him that day so he played a mandolin instead - must admit the mandolin looks good on the video.

Regards Strollo's Cafe, there are actually 4 of us in the band but only 2 of us ever write the material. So it's my brother and I who recorded all the parts for 'Locked out'.

I like you idea of a slow mix of Kare Kare.

I'm liking the idea of the slowed down version. The lyrics do lend themselves to a more ballad-like approach.

I think it works well. I like the fact that it isn't a straight cover, you've re-arranged it, and it isn't a cover of Neil Finn's own slow version (see Fleadh). I really like the way it's filmed, similar to Tim Finn's live studio DVD that came with Imaginary Kingdom.

Are there a couple of timing problems or is that just down to Youtube? Other than that I thought it was performed and sung really well.

Do you guys record originals as well? You should share those here too if you do.

It does indeed - thanks for setting that straight though! I was all like...can you get a mandolin to sound like that??? Confused

Actually, that smiley should be a Smiler with question marks over its head.

Thanks a lot for the comment Camus. I have posted some of our original material here.
All this stuff was recorded 'live' just straight into my little camera.
These were not long written at the time of posting these.

A song called 'Time'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_kOxbsfgBQ

A song called 'Rant in F minor'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcvC4YYWDgE&feature=related

We got few others up on Youtube but that's probably enough for starters eh...

We're called 'Strollo's Cafe' if you want to search for more !

cheers
