Yes, only as part of the Capitol Albums Vol. 2 boxset.

I basically bought the box for that CD - Having grown up on the Mono US LP of Rubber Soul. In my mind it's a really nice, folky, much more consistent record than either Help! or the UK Rubber Soul (of which it was a mix'n'match)

I keep meaning to track down the capitol boxsets, as I only grew up listening to the UK editions of the albums.

The early albums, are they true stereo Iarla?

That would be high praise indeed if he actually said that. I couldn't help but notice that sounds suspiciously like a similar quote attributed to Eric Clapton. He was asked in an interview what it felt like to be the greatest living guitar player and he replied, "I don't know. Ask Prince."

I KNOW I read an article that quoted Paul McCartney as saying he'd give one of his kids to be able to write songs like Neil... and Neil jokingly saying "Well, I've got some of Paul's kids right here". Can't find it now. But I know I read it. :P

The whole rumor of a McCartney quote about Neil was probably spawned from the comment by the British journalist. As rumors tend to grow and evolve, it probably got more interesting everytime it was passed on and soon became folklore that nobody could prove or disprove, but given that it rang with a degree of familiarity, nobody wanted to dispute it. Does that make any sense? In short, maybe McCartney never actually said anything about his Neil Finn, and this all just about a speculative quote by some British journalist.

I have to agree, the article (which I also quickly found) was simply enough to spark a twist on the notion the journalist made. Here is what the article says, in case you don't feel like following links...

It’s also that respect which had one British journalist gloating a few years ago that "Neil Finn writes songs that Paul McCartney would sell his children to be able to write." Ridiculous statement, but the scribe got his point across, Finn’s best songs could easily stand beside some of the beautiful classic McCartney ballads. There is no denying a Beatles influence in Finn’s music, but such was that band’s massive influence, who in pop music hasn’t been influenced to some degree by Lennon and McCartney.

I had always wondered about Finn’s response to the famous McCartney quote and made a mental note to ask him should I ever have the opportunity. Recently the opportunity arose … and so did the question. With tongue firmly in cheek, Finn’s immediate response … "Actually I just bought some of McCartney’s Kids!"

Pretty funny. I hope Paul does regard Neil's writing with that much respect.

Just FYI - look for a new interview with Neil conducted just a week or so ago (just days after his birthday) on KTVU.com. I did the interview, so I know it's coming!

The above song was I believe performed at Lalalalive Holland oct 1998.

And It was also interesting to watch the Concert For Linda - I'm guessing here .. but it really did seem that this was kid in a candy store moment for Neil Wink He knows these songs backwards - dream come true stuff.

Don't mean to sound sychophantic but I love when Neil does a song cover - his voice is so uplifting, it adds so much to the song

He certainly nailed "Nowhere Man" .. I like the harmony, especially at the end of the song .. those backing singers were not too bad at all .. They took the high road while Neil took the low ..Nice!!

Yeah, what was with that? Are they famous in their home country?

I'm in agreement with you cinnamon. Especially when Neil's doing Beatles songs - they really suit his voice.

Maybe I should have added that to the thread about CH fans also being Beatles fans. I'm a fan of Beatles songs when Neil sings 'em.

It would be nice to think he did say that, but part of me thinks if it is true it's probably because Macca is confident that his music has influenced Neil. I like the Beatles a hell of a lot but don't see Paul as being the most modest in these terms somehow..

It does seem like media beat-up. More like a rumour than a true-mour.
To me, personally, Neil is the best song writer. Smiler But a goodly proportion of that for me is also the lyrics. I believe he is an exceptional poet.
