That's What I Call Love |
Personally, I'm glad both versions exist and that I have both. I love the opening sequence of The Climber-Rest of the Day Off-Hole in the Ice on One Nil, and I agree that The Climber is superior in its original form (despite what Neil says, it does *not* sound like Uptown Girl). I also prefer the original Turn and Run--although Lisa Germano's voice blends better with Neil's on the remake, Sheryl Crow's orginals have more of an edge to them, which I think helps the song. And I like Don't Ask Why. But I really don't like Elastic Heart, and I do like Human Kindness (even if it doesn't quite fit the rest of the album--kind of like Even a Child on ToE). And the remake of Hole in the Ice is interesting--I can't decide which version I prefer. So, really, I'll take both.

Ever since I heard that, I do sort of hear Uptown Girl in there, but only slightly and it doesn't bother me in the least. And I'd certainly never noticed it before. |

The worst thing about One All is that phoney-sounding angel choir effect on Lullaby Requiem. It ruins the song I think, which is a beautiful thing but somewhat spoilt by the angel choir. I like Human Kindness though, really good upbeat song. I also think Anytime is improved by the additional line at the end (although you can hear it is dubbed in). Otherwise I don't find much difference between them.
Don't Ask Why I've also considered to be rubbish. I think anyone can spout nonsense words and I kind of imagine Wendy and Lisa persuading Neil it was the way to go. The fact that it was missed off One All and barely ever performed live (if at all) says enough I reckon! Neil woke up to sense!! |

Well the "phoney-sounding angel choir" may not be made up of real angels, but it is a real children's choir and quite in line with Neil's other work during this period. He had written a and performed a number of songs for exclusive use in the Parables, Lullabies, and Secrests stage show. Afterwards, however, he obviously felt some songs like "Lullaby" and "Sweet Secret Peace" were good enough to make available (albeit limitedly) to the general public. The fact that the children's choir from the performance was included on the recording makes it all the more true to the artist's original intent.
"Don't Ask Why" is certainly more than rubbish. It may have some seemingly nonsense words but I think they all work together to form a cohesive emotion. I recall one reviewer saying that the song was basically "Zippity Do Dah with an erection" and I think that actually sums it up pretty well. It's that moment when someone you've been infatuated with finally returns the favor. I don't mind Cheryl's performance on the original "Turn & Run" but I don't care for the effects used on her vocals during the chorus. I also like the addition of more electric guitar on the One All version. ...And finally, you're right, you can totally tell that the additional lines in "Anytime" were dubbed in ... which is a bit annoying but does add something nice to the song. Personally, I think the 7WC version is the best. --- So. Pacific Radio Gothic: The Lost Neil Finn album Listen here: http://www.youtube.com/view_pl...t?p=B2B1F8F532203879 |

I like the One Nil version of Driving Me Mad a lot better than the version on One All. Too much Sheryl Crow at the wrong times. She was mixed just fine in the original.
I probably base this on the "heard it first" principle. Oh yeah, I like it being closer to the end of the album rather than the second song. I think it really brings a fitting peak to the album instead of spending it too early. Of course, it's my favorite song on the album (which probably puts me in a minority of one). All in all, I prefer One Nil far better. I just think it hangs together better. |

I agree that "Driving Me Mad" is the best song on the album which is why I don't like the fact that it gets buried at the end of One Nil. I also think the One All mix is stronger. The percussion it clearer and has more punch on the remix.
And what are you guys talking about when you say "The Climber" sounds like "Uptown Girl"? Are we talking about the Billy Joel song? If so, I'm really lost as to how it sounds anything like "The Climber", please explain! --- So. I can't hear it resemble Uptown Girl either....maybe the plucking of the strings at the start goes in the same note direction.
Anyway, I do love the version on One Nil...way way better. Like I said, the One All version is so much a downer, listening to the flow go down at the start instead of more uplifting. Such a bad start to a CD just with the set of notes. That alone turns me to One Nil. |

Yes, the Uptown Girl reference is to the plucking figure that runs through the song. There is one bit that, if you take it in isolation, sounds a bit like Uptown Girl. But it never struck me until I read Neil's comment about it, and even then I prefer it to the refigured version.

For a second I thought that somebody put up the good quality version on YouTube. Where on earth is that one hiding? |

Something So Strong![]() |
I just picked up One All and have been playing it on repeat since yesterday (with the exception of this morning, when I listened to Spoon's new album on the way to work). I've been listening to Try Whistling This for the past several years, and while One All is different, I like it more and more with each listen. I have a feeling that it will become a go-to album for me after a few more spins.
I love the first two tracks, especially Driving Me Mad, and I think the album really enters into greatness from Turn And Run onward. That's just my early impression. I haven't heard One Nil yet, but intend to purchase it eventually. If the release of the new CH album gets pushed back again, I might have to buy it sooner than later. |

What's the difference between the 2 albums?
Is it worth buying One All? Is it even available in England? |

I'm sure One All is available in England as an import or at least used via some shopping website. The song order shifts slightly (most notably, Driving Me Mad and Rest of the Day Off switch places), The Climber, Driving Me Mad, Hole In the Ice, and Turn and Run are remixed, and Don't Ask Why and Elastic Heart are replaced by the heartbreaking Lullaby Requiem which I think is about the death of his mother, and Human Kindness which is quirkily enjoyable and gets heavy toward the end. |

You can get One All from the US via Amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Al...0711492&sr=1-1-spell
I bought it when it came out as my collection didn't seem complete without it - whether it's worth £10 for two extra tracks and a few re-mixes is debatable. --------------- "Love this life" |

Ideally, he'd re-record One Nil with a proper band adding the extra songs from One All.
But what would it be called? 2-1? |

Maker of Secret Planes![]() |
But I prefer the song order on One All. I think most people prefer the song order of which ever one they heard first, though. Definitely get both.
