The only CH version I have of that song was in the middle of Chocolate Cake at the Albani Club in Switzerland (my favourite version ever) from when Tim was in the band. Thing is Tim was singing it.

I love the Finn Brothers cover of Too Many People, and I think Neil's There Is A Light is better than the original.

My favourite version of Throw Your Arms Around Me is from the CH's MTV Unplugged appearance, but again Tim has a strong presence in that one.

I really love Neil's version of the old standard, "I Can't Get Started," which he sometimes sings for his dad (I know he did it during the One All tour and this past summer with CH).

Amazing range of songs and styles listed here. Quite a versatile guy, that Neil.

(I also love the Finn Brothers' "Ballroom Blitz," but that's mostly Tim).

Wow, I've heard most of these, but thanks for the tips on the few I haven't!!!!

I'm going to Google, Limewire & YouTube in hopes of finding Neil sing "Making Room For Nigel". One of my favorite songs ever. He would do an awesome cover, I'd bet.

Paige, I heard Neil cover You Sexy Thing during the Try Whistling This tour at on of the Sydney concerts. I think he did a version on la la live, he did two covers, one was Venus and I am pretty sure the other was You Sexy Thing... not 100% thu

The version the Crowdies did in Leigh last month of Throw Your Arms Around me was just sublime. 11/10 from the Kiwi judge guys Wink

Birmingham UK, December 3 2007, Rocky Raccoon!

Better than the original, in my opinion!

But I'd have to agree that "There is a light.." and ANY time he's sung "Throw your arms..." are definitely up there as the best!

Have yet to hear "She's not there", which I believe Crowded House did for the soundtrack of "The Crossing". Love that song, so can only think that it would be superb with Neil singing it!

Thanks for all the posts so far. I guess the one song I wasn't aware NF had covered and would love to hear is "She's Not There".

Been searching the net in vain to find even a snippet with no luck. If anyone can help me out please PM me.

Thanks

Bart, you can get the CH version of She's Not There (from the soundtrack of The Crossing) on the Other Enz double CD along with over 40 other tracks including CH doing Throw Your Arms Around Me. If you look it up on (US) Amazon.com you should be able to hear a sample if you have Windows. You should be able to buy it cheaper elsewhere, though.

There's a live version of BBHS out there that has Neil singing the first verse of "The Drugs Don't Work". I'm always so bummed when he stops signing it after only a verse. It's just beautiful.

Does "The Parting Glass" count? I really like the version on the Fleadh bootleg ("Goodnight And Joy Be With You All") but for my money it doesn't get any better than when they throw a verse in during "Hole in the River". I about died when CH played it in Chicago this year.

I heard Neil do a terrific version of "Smoke on the Water" in NYC back in '98. It was funny when he launched into it on his keyboard in response to a wise-ass audience request; it got even funnier when he started enjoying it just a little *too* much, simultaneously channeling Ian Gillan's strangled chicken vocals AND Jon Lord's pompous organ. And, if I recall correctly, a tiny, pre-pubescent Liam Finn did the signature Ritchie Blackmore guitar riff, which may have been the funniest thing of all.

Ahhhhh ! how could I forget Neil's cover of Pale Blue Eyes from 7th Note Show Club in San Fran in '98, the same show he did a short version of Close To You and and a solo acoustic Devil You Know

This amused me simply because even on his own songs Neil makes plenty of word mistakes.

I love "There is a Light" very much, and I think Neil has a much better voice than Morrissey. Morrissey is a great songwriter, but I just don't care for his singing.

One that Neil does well that has not yet been mentioned is his version of "Southern Man" originally by Neil Young.

He also does a pretty good version of "Venus" by Shocking Blue (or Bananarama for those of us who grew up in the 80s).

Big Grin that cover of Smoke on the Water sounds hilarious!I wish I could hear it.

My favourite covers that Neil/Crowded House have done are Sexual Healing and She's Not There. I've often tried copying Neil's guitar strum on Sexual Healing to no avail..what's he doing there!?

Although I just remembered the impromptu version of I Can't Get Started that Neil did at one of the CH shows in New York last year, for his dad. I love the way his voice sounds there, and it's such a lovely song.

Oh, and of course not forgetting the version Split Enz did of You Send Me (a live snippet from the last episode of the Enzology podcasts)...those vocal harmonies were beautiful!

What's this?!

Neil covering XTC?! I have GOT to hear this somehow!

I knew he did There Is A Light (which is one of my fave songs of all time), but no idea he did How Soon Is Now? as well!

And (thanks to FinngirlWink), I've got the Sexual Healing cover... I love it. Smiler

Precious, precious thing, you are the song that makes me sing...

Neil: "Ashley Dean, where is she? Thank you Ashley for your kind words." Big Grin 8/13/07
