Kira, I'm a JBJ fan, too. He can write a really good lyric that one doesn't expect in his rock niche.

For a slow tune, I'd pick "Bed of Roses". For a faster tune, "It's my Life." And Neil could do Jon's Catholic rumination of "Living in Sin" Big Grin

Hello All...

This is my first post on the forum, and I liked this topic, so I thought I'd throw out a few songs I'd like to see Neil take a crack at somewhere down the line:

1)"Someday, Someway" (Marshall Crenshaw)...good live video on You Tube

2)"Cruel To Be Kind" (Nick Lowe)

3)"Strange Season" (Michael Penn)

4)"Kid" (Pretenders)

5)"Loveable" (Elvis Costello)

I became hooked on Neil & the Crowdies last summer after giving "Recurring Dream" a detailed listen over a period of a few weeks (I had originally purchased it back in '99). I then bought some other CH CDs, as well as Neil's solo efforts. He shot right to the top of my list of most admired and most listened to musician/songwriter in short order, displacing Andy Partridge and XTC, who spent most of the 1990s there.

Funny thing is, I originally purchased DDIO and SST as 45s back around 1987 (?), when they were originally issued, and did listen to them fairly regularly. And every few months I would give "Recurring Dream" a spin in the CD player after I bought it, but for some reason it took me a while before I realized the depth/impact of Neil's talent. I'm solidly on board now, and hope that I'll be fortunate enough to see him perform in 2007 if/when he swings by the New York area.

I've enjoyed reading the posts/info of all the knowledgeable fans (from NZ, Australia, the UK, Canada and U.S. and points beyond) on this forum, especially the veterans who have seen Neil solo shows and Crowdies shows on multiple occasions, and all the long-time listeners. Thanks for helping me make up for some lost ground.

Hey Hurl82, think a Neil cover of 'Cruel To Be Kind' is an inspired choice! And, since you mentioned XTC, I'd love to hear Neil/Finn Bros have a crack at 'Radios In Motion' too.

I went to see the gorgeous mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins sing last Dec, and before she came on they played a dreadful foreign language (Portugese?) version of DDIO, and it certainly confirmed my belief that no-one has ever done a better-than-original version of a NF song!

I was thinking I'd like to hear Neil cover Joe Jackson's 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?' then it occurred to me that what I was really thinking is 'I wish Neil had actually written that song in the first place,' which is possibly what this thread is really about, if that makes any sense...

Minty, I suspect you are talking about the Italian-language version of DDIO (I believe it's called Alta Marea)...I've heard it and calling it "dreadful" is much too kind.

to keep this on topic, I'd like to hear Neil cover Parihaka, or perhaps Incognito in California (I'm only kidding, sort of...)

"Lovefool" would be really cool I think. And "Bed of Roses"... oh my goodness I would flip out.

"Accidents Will Happen" or "New Amsterdam" by Elvis Costello. Definitely.

And I just heard his version of "Sexual Healing"... I basically turned into a puddle. Meltworthy!!! Have now decided to play that on my honeymoon.

Precious, precious thing, you are the song that makes me sing...

Bed of Roses would be very nice - I used to be a huge Bon Jovi fan throughout my teens and that is such a lovely song.

Personally I would be interested to hear Neil's take on Hazard by Richard Marx - I remember my sister introducing me to the song when I was 10 years old, and later buying it as my first single when we found it in a bargain bin! It's the song that gave me my love of the whole Acoustic guitar sound so I'd love to hear Neil play it...

One of my all time favourite songs is I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song by Jim Croce.

I think Neil would make a wonderful cover of this.

RB: Yep, Breithaupt is a common name around here haha.

I like the idea of The Scientist as well... what do you all think of Unchained Melody??? I think I would seriously turn into a mess of tears at this. I think it's because when Neil sings more ballad type songs and he's got higher notes to hit, he has his kind of passion and pain in his voice... like during whispers and moans, when he sings the word "moans". LOVE IT.

OH OH OH just thought of another one-a much more organic, guitar and piano only version of Your Song by Elton John. I know that it's pure ELTON, but I wouldn't mind hearing Neil sing it.

I agree with those who would like to hear him do some Coldplay...

Personally, I have never been able to handle Coldplay for long periods, as I think Chris Martin's voice annoys me slightly... However, I think I still like the songs, so hearing someone with a voice I love sing something by them would be interesting for me.
