Rolling Stones my hat. It's a Buddy Holly song which The Rolling Stones covered!

Sorry to be all technical *grin!*

(BTW The Rolling Stones single "I Wanna Be Your Man" was written by Lennon\McCartney - Interesting!)

Oh terribly sorry ::iarla::, now I'm ashamed. I just searched a bit and found a Rolling Stones' page with the lyrics of this song, and I thought it'd be theirs.

One thing, does that thing of bap, bap, bap bap, appear on Buddy Holly's original version, or is it a CH invention?

Wow, what a great resource of material to go through. I have to make an important point to the fans from outside NZ - there are several collaborations by lesser known NZ acts that are essential for you to track down.

I refer specifically to the Dave Dobbyn tracks 'Blindman's Bend' and 'Kingdom Come'. In addition the Emma Paki track 'Greenstone'. There are a few more including some Bic Runga collaborations, but the above songs feature Neil's vocals and guitar playing at their best.

If you are motivated enough to track these down you will be rewarded with some classic Finn, as well as discovering some more of Neil's favourite contemporaries (and friends).

I would be keen to hear from others who may have recently discovered some of this material - what were you're impressions?

regards, Daz

That's actually the instrumental sounds of the Stones' recording of Buddy's song. I quote Andrew Oldham from Time is on our side:
quote:
Although it was a Buddy Holly song, I considered it to be like the first song Mick and Keith wrote, in that they picked the concept of applying that Bo Diddley thing to it. The way they arranged it was the beginning of the shaping of them as songwriters. From then on they wrote. At that time, Mick, Keith, and I lived together. They were into the last half bottle of wine and going through, it was one of those magical moments. When Keith played that to me in the front room you could actually HEAR the record in that room. What basically made the record was that whole Bo Diddley acoustic guitar thrust.
So there you have it - CH playing Buddy Holly's song with a Stones flavor!

What about Neil playing 'Last to Know' on the Panel a few years back with Richard someone (sorry, can't remember name, some classical guy) on violin? It is seriously one of the best performances I've ever heard - think about including it. Its on the Panel compilation CD from a few years back.

How does one go about finding Neil's version of " Sexual Healing " ? I've always wanted to hear it, but have not had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How about "Carried Away" and "Holy Smoke." I haven't seen them on anyone's lists yet.

Both are from the North American version of Frenzy , and also appeared as Enz b-sides.

"I Walk Away" (extended mix) also seems to be absent.

I'd like to know as well. I do know that this song appears on the album Andrew Denton's Musical Challenge, but I haven't had any luck finding an available copy unless I want to pay a fortune for an import from overseas.

Maybe the powers that be should consider officially releasing a disc of Finn rarities?

Actually it's part of the original Buddy Holly version, the male back up singers sing it, more bop bop bop bop.

How about the After Hours version of 'Late In Rome'? - a 17-year-old Neil on vocals and piano. Ultra, ultra, ultra rare, but very nice. Memory jog time: After Hours was the band Neil was a member of immediately before joining the Enz in 1977. They recorded 5 demos.

I don't think there were. But you're right -- the remix version is quite different, and superior to what is on the album. I'm wondering who was in charge of the remix? Clearmountain? Does anyone know?

It's actually a Split Enz song, from the final studio album "See You Round." On the US release, if you play the second side first, and then the first (an order which my husband swears is the way it's meant to be heard), it's the last song you'll hear. Rather a poignant way to finish the Split Enz catalogue.

You'll also hear a great version of it on the first ENZSO album, with vocals by Neil.

Hope that helps!

Wow! How does a 17-year-old Neil sound like? And how was his piano playing way back then? Wink

Semi, where is the After Hours version of Late In Rome, I don't belive it was played in Enzology (if it was it certainly wasn't in it's entirety unless I'm losing the plot)? I remember snippets of Fall Out With The Lads, both studio and live (gee I'd love to hear the full After Hours concert) and Cry Baby Cry from Wellington 76 Enz show, but not Late In Rome, unless it was a snippet.

You not telling me about stuff you have? Big Grin

Neil's piano playing was basically the same as it is today.
