Thanks Melty
That answer kind of makes my question look like one of the dumb variety, but I had to ask. I'd love to think that one day I could make it to some Tim shows in the US, however realistically I'd probably be travelling over there in my coffin. I hope everyone who's going has a fantastic time, and will take the time to provide some reviews. And here's hoping that Tim's still in the same friendly, chatty mood that he was just recently in New Zealand. I think you guys are in for a treat. Texas Rose |

Aw, sorry TR, didn't mean to make you feel your question was dumb. It's better to ask than to wonder, as far as I'm concerned.
I hope you do get to travel to NA sometime, hopefully sooner, rather than later. |

Not your fault at all Melty - and I certainly didn't mean to imply that.
I'm grateful for your answer and for the link, because I'll start doing my homework Texas Rose |

What size crowds does Tim get for his solo shows in Aus/NZ? They're pretty small here. He played for something like 40-50 last time here in Portland (it was a sell-out!) and the time before in Portland drew fewer than 100 in a 600 capacity room. He gets similar numbers in Seattle. The crowds are knowledgable and adoring-just small. Maybe his luck will change the next go 'round here and he'll pack the Doug Fir. He hasn't played there before and it'll be the tail end of a holiday weekend.

It's always hard for me to judge numbers (especially since I tend to be close to if not at the front) but I'd say in Sydney and Melbourne he's easily pulled audiences of at least 300, elsewhere in Australia would be smaller, say 100-200. I think his album launch show for IK in Auckland attracted between 200-300, maybe more, while the venue he played as part of the tour there was smaller, but full - in fact I think both might have been sold out. Wellington might have been a similar number, while I'd say the other 3 cities on his NZ IK tour were all between 100-200 - all for relatively small places. He seems to be downsizing his shows across the board (began with his Australasian IK tour of 2006-7, where a number of shows were cancelled, vague excuses were given at the time but the most plausible I heard was that it due to low attendance - at least for the venues chosen - in those cities) and managing to fill the venues he choses to play, if not to absolute capacity certainly to the point where it feels like a good attendance. Whatever the exact numbers I can say for certainly that they're considerably larger than any of the 3 US venues I saw him play last year. He mentioned in one of his blogs that he now prefers to do shorter tours and play to smaller venues, so I think he's found his niche in various places and sticks with it. It will be interesting to see if he downsizes any further for his next Australasian tour. I don't think the need is there given the attendances he pulled on the IK tour, in fact if he does another album launch show in Sydney he should consider a larger venue, as the Basement sold out rather quickly (not sure the exact capacity, but it seemed between 100-150)!
******* Oh yeah yeah yeah you’ve got a strong mind I like to sit with you and talk for hours |

I believe the capacity of the venue Tim played in Portland in January (Mississippi Studios) was about 80 and yes, it was sold out. The capacity for The Triple Door in Seattle was around 300 and although I don't know if it was sold out, it looked like the place was full with quite a few people standing in the back as well.
I would have much preferred to see him at Mississippi Studios again this time because it is such a small, intimate venue. Isn't the Doug Fir around 300? Will be interesting to see what the turnout is. |

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing people in an intimate venue. But...it's also a real depressing thought for me, about what kind of world I live in. I would love to wake up in a world where Tim's playing sellout gigs at the Shark Tank, the Shoreline and the Coliseum.
The differences that would be worked by such great music reaching more people would more than offset the loss of my personal and perhaps selfish desire not to have to squint so far to the stage. -- > _ |

There's not long now until Tim's first show (Bumbershoot). 30 August according to his Myspace page - less than one week.
Lucky people. Looking forward to hearing whether he plays any/many new songs. Have a great time anyone who's going, and please, please take the time to drop in and let us know what you think. Texas Rose |
