I would have to say "The Land Torments the Sea" was Tim and Neil's most country tinged song... it did have a steel lap guitar in it.
The info Tim gave in Toronto about this album would lead me to believe it is going to be rootsy and folkesque... No drums, lots of acoustic guitar and tinged with fiddle. I don't know how far that leans towards country though. |

I'll come clean TR, I really don't like country. In fact, I thought Land Torments the Sea (which I agree is the most country song they've done) was the worst produced song out of both the Visconti and Froom sessions for EIH.
I really see this new album being a bit Beginning of the Enz. Folky acoustic, probably acoustic guitar, piano (maybe harmonium) and violin. Maybe Golding will pull out the viola... ----------------------------- What do you think it is, a space helmet for a cow? Camus, are we expected to believe that after all those hours spent galloping over the Moors, that you never once sat round the old campfire rejoicing in yet another day of evading capture by the local Sherif (Calamity Jane?), without at least one chorus of "Don't Fence Me In", or "Tumblin Tumble Weed" passing your lips? I must say, i find that very hard to believe Jessy "Camus" James.
Well now, to me that sounds like it leans so far into Country, that it's fallen over & can't get up. Sounds like the making of one hell of a Grand Ol' Opry "Ho Down"! "The Conversation - Country Leanings, Tinged With Fiddle"
It's an "achy breaky" genre MeltyIce. Keep those tissues handy. If it ain't broke, & it don't hurt, it ain't Country. Swing her high Swing her low Swing that gal in calico Promenade around you go Circle up two, buckle up four Follow that fiddle riff to the door, & do-see-do your partners........... Tim "Garth" Finn presents "The (Western Swing) Conversation", with Eddie "Quick Draw" Rayner, Miles "Waylon" Golding and with Brett "Hayride Tex" Adams on guitar/dobro/mandolin, i am really looking forward to this album/project/life-style change. I only hope there are enough fox holes on the Moors to tide me over until it is finally released. It's a tough life in the saddle, & all i can say is "moma's don't let your sons (or daughters) grow up to be cowpersons". Well, i guess i'll be mozyin'. "Tim Finn's doin' Country? Well, sheeeooot. As I was passing through Deadwood I may have been heard to sing a few brief snatchs of Burning Ring of Fire Seany.
I went down down down, That burning ring of fire Actually I don't mind a bit of Johnny. Cash that is, and Dolly has a good voice, I like 9 to 5, but is that country? ----------------------------- What do you think it is, a space helmet for a cow? I don't mind you singing your way through Deadwood, or sitting around the camp fire singing songs (or howling with a country lilt to your voices as you scamble over the moors
If what was said in Toronto is on the money, then I think the new album should be a ripper. I don't mind a bit of folkesque (a bit). Those songs can be great for a good sing-a-long. Texas Rose |

Singing Tim's songs around a campfire...how surreal would that be?

Excellent - I'll be availing myself... That puts a thought in mind - wouldn't it be great for Tim Fans to do an album of his songs, for him. We'll have to wait for the release of the new one though - I wouldn't want any gems to be left out. And I know there will be gems coming our way. I don't know how music management works, but I'm hoping that after the release of the new album, there will be official release concerts, or something. Texas Rose |

Yes you should. And I'll run along chasing you singing.. oh, never mind. Peter mentioned in another thread (Split Enz) that Tim will be promoting the album after its release. I hope he'll do some shows in Melbourne. I was last at a Melbourne show for him in February 2007. It seems so long ago. Texas Rose |

Take her easy with those chilly beans Camus. You might last a tad longer in the saddle that way. I think "9 To 5" is technically "alt" country by the way. Yep, poor old Johnny sure was a sucker for those old chilly beans. Wouldn't it be good to see Tim live "In Store", riding a wild steer, or doing some ropin' & brandin', while the band played on. Don't tell me that wouldn't get folk stampeeding to the tills for the new album. Or a promotional "Round Up" down Hollywood Boulevard, with the cattle branded with the name of the album "The Conversation - In Stores Now!" on their rumps. Tim could ride along (on his good horse "Escapade"), behind the promotional herd, Buffalo Bill Cody style, nodding in appreciation to the fans, lifting his hat for the ladies. Maybe occasionally a crack of the whip, when the steers get out of hand. "The New Tim Finn Album Is Available Over There, Although I Don't Actually Work Here. Say what you got in that pipe there stranger?" -------------------------------------------- Oranjekoek...lekker! |

I don't know, a bit of Horse to Water would seem to be appropriate... No worries here--The Conversation (nee Echo Chamber) will be brilliant, impatiently awaiting its release and trying to figure out how to get to the West Coast in September to catch The Man live. I've seen I See Redabilly performed live, and, well, Tim is a living tribute to whatever the heck genre that song might fall into. Or perhaps there's no genre that can truly capture it... |

I'd love to see something like I See Redabilly performed live.

When have I ever tempted you, Mummakook
Tim Finn in the Great American West, what could be bad? And, really, how much country western influence can there possibly be in an album with all those good Kiwi collaborators recorded in Newton? Inquiring minds want to know... |
