Listening to Phil's sketch track 'Mongrel' . Wow!

Downloaded it last night and can't stop listening to it. Has a very cool, ominous feel to it.

Then you also to get back onto the myspace page and check out the Syd track - just gets better!

Yeah, based on "Mongrel" and other new sketch tracks Phil has shared from time to time, Love Is A Moron is promising to be a really great follow-up to Novelty Act. I'm glad you're listening, phillo, and keep on eye out for more sketches to come!

I don't believe "Syd" is intended to be an album track, but it MIGHT be something Phil "donates" to one of Peter Green's I Like It Rare compilations. I HOPE SO...because I'd really love to hear it finished. It would probably go down as one of the greatest tributes to Syd Barrett because Phil has a unique take on and deeper insight into the man than most musicians and critics I've heard prattle on about him.

Oh yeah, and April 16th is Spike Milligan's birthday, so don't forget to give "Crazy Man" a big listen on that day!

Syd is also a great song but without your post Electric Elf, I wouldn't have dug deeper to understand the Syd Barret connection.


Can you clarify something for me?

As the tunes on Phil's myspace page have piqued my interest again, I've done a little googling around and found this .....

"Schnell Fenster was a Melbourne-based band, formed in 1986 by members of Split Enz after the break up of that band. Tentatively named "The Wanx", the band selected their name (which is German for "fast window"), because it "appealed to [their] perversity".

My understanding, remembering an interview with the band in the mid 80's was that name 'Schnell Fenster' came from one of the members fathers (grandfathers) wartime friend. His surname was Fenster and his nickname was 'Schnell' due to his speed and agility at avoiding bullets. I remember this distinctly, but maybe the band were taking the p!ss.

I sent the Mongrel MP3 to a pal that considers himself a bit of an expert in all things studio, told him nothing about it apart from the fact that I loved it.

His reply ;

yeah cool. everything sits nice in the mix until the synth sax comes in. from
there the whole mix is a bit messy. not a bad home job :-)

I'll wait some time before I let him know who the artist was. BIG SMILES

I'm afraid I know very little Schnell Fenster trivia and am not clear on why they used that name. Phil's father served in the North African/Mediterranean front during WWII, so maybe there's truth in that nickname story. Or maybe they just liked the sound of the name and picked it to be absurd -- that's what I always figured.

Interesting blindfold test you did with "Mongrel," but please make it clear to your friend that it is just a sketch and may not even be used in the final version. It's just Phil's way of getting ideas down that he'll rework/re-record later.

However, I do think it sounds really good myself. I love hearing the rough and raw stuff and getting a taste of how Phil works.

I wont pursue the Schnell Fenster trivia, in case I'm correct.

I've read that it's not so uncommon for a 6 pack of Phil's unlaundered y-fronts to arrive in the mail.
And whilst the Elwood canal is stinky at the moment and the thrip are on the move, it wouldn't be cool to upset the Postie any further.

I've a very eclctic taste in music, but loved Mongrel at first listen and became quite defensive when it was semi dismissed by my mate. Funny how I can be protective of things that I like when I feel others dont get the gist. ( all good ) And yep it's a sketch.

Have listened to it through head phones and on the big gear and it sounds fine to me. Like you ELF I love hearing the raw and rough stuff and listening to a work in progress, though I'm stuffed if it could be mixed any better.

Is this something that would work with vocals, I don't know. I reckon it's a soundscape.

What I do know, it's great to be able to discuss stuff like this with you folks and be able to give some feedback.

I know what you mean about people not always 'getting' his music straight away, but with a fair bit of brainwashing it grows on people.
I think a lot of the time it's because he music is often so different to other things going on.
I got my best mate to listen to the Novelty Act album recently as he said it sounded like a cross between Steve Harley and David Bowie!

I don't quite hear it that way, but that's an interesting comparison to make and certainly complimentary. I love those first couple Cockney Rebel albums.

Remember they are only rough tracks, ideas. Don't know if you heard it but Remind Me to Forget was a very good one!! He's changing them all the time on his myspace page.

Yep, I'm mindfull of them being sketches, should have confirmed that in my post.
Just that last night the sample was stalling half way through, tonight it's playing almost to the end.
