As I mentioned in the Phil Judd CDs board, I stated my ideal tracklisting for a Phil Judd compilation as someone mentioned the idea of a compilation of Phil stuff getting released, though this would be hard due to all those record labels. For those of you who have not seen my suggestions, here it is:

1. 129
2. Malmsbury Villa
3. Under The Wheel
4. Time For A Change (first half Mental Notes version, second half Second Thoughts version)
5. Titus (Second Thoughts version)
6. Spellbound (Mental Notes version)
7. Late Last Night (Second Thoughts version)
8. Sweet Dreams
9. Sugar And Spice
10. Incognito in California (demo 1977)
11. Counting The Beat
12. Whisper
13. Love Hate Relationship
14. OK Alright A Huh Oh Yeah
15. Heroes Let You Down

I don't know any of his solo songs, so I can't make any suggestions on those.

I like your compilation list, but it's a little too reliant on his Enz material and I'd certainly go for more than just one Swingers track as the album is sheer genius.

Check out his Mr Phudd's Novelty Act which is still available as far as I know and is an exceptional album, there's also a few of his solo tracks as well as some that he recorded with Tim Finn on the Other Enz compilation.

Well said Azzza!
As I said on the previous thread, you have to take into consideration his Swingers stuff and solo stuff - if you don't you're missing out so much great material!
To know only his Enz material is to not know his full capabilities.

Picking just two is difficult. I suppose lots of people would go for Falling off A Cloud, but I would prefer Mindf***ed if we could get away with it! Other than that, Novelty Act and Eyes in The Back Of My Head, I suppose. I'll probably change my mind tommorow!

From Novelty Act I'd choose Falling Off A Cloud and Idol Eyes...I love the way that song changes style and pace - harking back to Phil's Split Enz days.

You'd have to have Love Hate Relationship, Whisper and OK Alright Uh Huh Oh Yeah by Schnell Fenster, but I think I prefer Happy Feet to Heroes Let You Down.

I think I'd steer away from Split Enz songs with Tim only vocals, except Time For A Change which would go after the Mental Notes Stranger Than Fiction. Spellbound would be from Beginning Of The Enz and Under The Wheel must be on it too.

Counting The Beat is a must too, but I'm not sure about what other Swingers tracks should go on. I guess It Ain't What You Dance... would have to make the cut too.

I'd probably also chuck on Precious Time (prefer it to Long Hard Road) for a bit of variety.

I have to say AGM if we're talking about a Judd compilation - then to be honest I would only use songs that Phil sings on, even if he wrote the song.
Interesting choices being put forward here, and good to see people must have listened to Novelty Act as tracks from it are being mentioned.

Don't you mean the Spellbound version? BOTE version has Tim singing, not Phil.

What?? No Practical Joker, or One Tracked Mind?
& what about Fire Extinguisher? & The Sound Of Trees? & what about Idol Eyes? Or Dictionary Of Love? That's a Glam Rock solid gold hit, waiting to burn up the charts! More hooks than a fishing convention. You can almost see the smoke machines on that one! Eeker

I just tried and found it quite hard. I think Mr Phudd is his best post Enz work, the song writing is really strong, it is a compelling work and i'd hate to try to wrench any of the tracks off. Again I love everything he did with the Enz.

For the rest I love:

Counting the Beat
One Good Reason
Dreamin' Away
One Track Mind
Private Lives
Magic Hour
Ok Alright Ahuh Oh Yeah
Heroes let you Down
Love-Hate Relationship
The Sound of Trees

But I like most of his work. A bit of a cop out, maybe a box set of all of them.

I have to agree that coming up with a Phil Judd compilation is rather hard considering that i have been drowned in Tim & Neil's songs for over 20 years. I certainly do like Schnell Fenster & it clearly shows on this compilation as I believe that Phil's best songs came through the Schnell Fenster period. Phil's solo stuff just does not do it for me. Anyway here is my list.

Maybe
Titus
Matinee Idyll
Sweet Dreams
Counting The Beat
One Good Reason
One Track Mind
Dreamin' Away
Falling Off A Cloud
Eyes In The Back Of My Head
Whisper
Love Hate Relationship
Sleeping Mountain
Skin The Cat
Ok Alright A Huh Oh Yeah
Fun City
Heroes Let You Down

Some Enz songs are good but he clearly does not have that same ability as Tim or Neil to come up with catchy tunes. Counting The Beat is clearly the catchy one from Phil but appears to be the only one that had the ability to continue to play in my head.
